City cars aren’t exactly big business in Australia, but there’s still a hunger for them on the tight streets of Europe.
That’s where the Toyota Aygo X Prologue steps in.
The sub-Yaris-sized concept points to Toyota’s new city car, a replacement for the Aygo hatchback on sale in Europe since 2014.
Measuring up at 3700mm long on a 2340mm wheelbase, the concept is 240mm shorter and has 210mm less between its wheels than the Yaris hatchback on sale in Australia.
Toyota says it points strongly to the production Aygo, although you can expect those wheel arches and 19-inch wheels to be toned down when the car hits the market.
The new Aygo will be built in the Czech Republic like the current car. Unlike the current model, however, it won’t be built alongside platform twins from Peugeot and Citroen.
The French brands have officially ended their city car tie-up with Toyota.
Although it’s likely to have petrol and hybrid power when it goes on sale in Europe, the Aygo X appears to point to what the first generation of Toyota electric cars will look like.
The rear end in particular, with swollen wheel arches and a glass boot lid surrounded by LED lights, appears in keeping with what we’ve learned about the brand’s upcoming electric design language.
We expect to see the first member of the Toyota e-TNGA family at the Shanghai motor show in April.
The world’s best-selling carmaker will reveal its rival to the Tesla Model Y, an electric SUV similar in size to the strong-selling RAV4.
Details about the car are hard to come by, but it’ll need to offer around 500km of range to compete with the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Volkswagen ID.4, and aforementioned Model Y.
