The 10 cheapest seven-seat SUVs in Australia

If you have a large or growing family, you might be in the market for a seven-seat SUV.

Most know seven-seaters can be more expensive than their five-seat equivalents, but that isn’t necessarily always the case. There are savings to be made on such cars, but how can you know where to look?

To help narrow it down, we’ve taken the cars from the medium and large SUV categories on the VFACTS sales charts and narrowed the list down to only the ones with seven-seat options.

We’ve then compared them based on their cheapest starting price, and ranked them into the 10 cheapest seven-seat SUVs you can buy in 2024.

Some of these cars can only be purchased in a seven-seat configuration, while others are specific variants of five-seat SUVs. We’ve chosen to leave the Kia Carnival out of this list as it’s classed as a people mover with eight seats, even though it’s cheaper than the Sorento on list price.

Some manufacturers list drive-away prices while others list prices excluding on-road costs, but we’re comparing them based on the cheapest list price of each model – in whatever form it comes.

Where possible, we’ll provide estimated drive-away pricing based on the manufacturer’s online configurators for a Victorian postcode.

Mahindra XUV700

The current cheapest seven-seater in Australia is the Mahindra XUV700, which starts at $36,990 drive-away.

Mahindra’s two-car XUV700 lineup extends to $39,990 drive-away, meaning it’s the only car here to stay below $40,000.

The range is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 149kW and 380Nm. It’s mated exclusively to a six-speed automatic transmission with drive sent to the front wheels.

All XUV700 models are offered with seven-seat capacity, Mahindra backs it with a seven-year, 150,000km warranty with seven years of roadside assist.

LDV D90

Around $2000 more expensive than the Mahindra is LDV’s D90, which commands a drive-away price of $38,937 for the base model.

The other two petrol options are priced at $43,147 drive-away and $46,832 drive-away respectively, while the range-topping diesel model brings an asking price of $52,095 drive-away.

LDV’s base, Executive, and Executive 4WD models are all powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 165kW and 350Nm. The range-topping Executive 4WD diesel fits a 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel four-cylinder engine under the bonnet, which is good for 158kW and 480Nm.

The range is covered by a five-year, 130,000km warranty, with roadside assistance offered for the same duration with new vehicle purchases.

Nissan X-Trail

The X-Trail is Nissan’s best-selling model in Australia, though not all variants offer seven-seat capacity. The cheapest such model is based on the ST and is priced at $40,790 before on-roads.

Though the X-Trail range offers an array of model variants, only three are sold with the option of seven seats: the ST, ST-L, and N-Trek. The cheapest seven-seater, the ST, is estimated to start at $41,990 drive-away.

All seven-seat versions of those three models come with four-wheel drive as standard, and pricing for the ST-L and N-Trek is listed as $47,290 and $50,890 before on-roads respectively.

The three models are available with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, which produces 135kW of power and 244Nm of torque. Nissan’s e-Power drivetrain isn’t available in seven-seat configuration, but buyers do benefit from a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty and five years of roadside assistance.

Mitsubishi Outlander

The Outlander has one of the more varied lineups on this list, and most variants are seven-seaters as standard. The cheapest will set you back $41,240 before on-road costs.

That cheapest version is the two-wheel drive LS, which sits second-from-the-bottom of the Outlander pecking order. At the top of the range is the four-wheel drive plug-in hybrid (PHEV) GSR, which is priced at $73,790 before on-roads.

Mitsubishi estimates drive-away pricing for the Outlander from $42,250, while the PHEV is $62,620.

Three PHEV Outlander models are available as seven-seaters, which combine a 2.4-litre petrol engine with a 20kWh lithium-ion battery for combined outputs of 185kW and 450Nm. All other models are powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine making 135kW of power and 244Nm.

The Outlander is covered by a five-year, 100,000km warranty as standard, that can be extended to 10 years and 200,000km if you service within Mitsubishi’s dealer network using its capped-price service program.

All vehicles are sold with 12 months of roadside assist, which can be extended for up to four years if the vehicle is serviced at an authorised Mitsubishi dealer.

Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max

There are three variants of Chery’s flagship SUV, the cheapest of which is priced at $41,990 drive-away.

That variant is the Urban, with the higher-spec Elite and Ultimate priced at $43,990 drive-away and $47,990 drive-away respectively.

All models are powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, which produces 180kW and 375Nm. All three variants also come standard with seven seats, and drive is sent through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The Tiggo 8 Pro Max is covered by a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, with seven years of roadside assistance available from purchase.

Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace

There are four standard variants of the Tiguan Allspace, as well as a brand-new Wolfsburg Edition right around the corner. The cheapest is priced at $43,990 before on-road costs.

The other three normal variants range in price from $47,990 to $60,590 before on-roads, while the Wolfsburg Edition costs $63,990 before on-roads and is available in just 1000 units in Australia. Volkswagen’s configurator estimates drive-away pricing from $47,990.

The base 110TSI Life is powered by a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, making 110kW and 250Nm. Up one rung is the 132TSi Life, which gains all-wheel drive and a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder with 132kW and 320Nm.

At the top of the range are the Elegance, R-Line, and Wolfsburg Edition (based on the R-Line), which all boast a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder with 162kW and 350Nm.

Volkswagen backs its Tiguan Allspace with a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, with all new vehicles offered with one year of roadside assistance. That can be extended by 12 months if the vehicle is serviced within the Volkswagen dealer network.

Honda CR-V

Just two CR-V models are available with seven-seat capacity, with the cheaper option priced at $47,300 drive-away.

That variant is the VTi X7, while the VTi L7 sits higher in the range and costs $53,500 drive-away. The wider CR-V range only went on sale in its latest iteration earlier this month, with a five-seat e:HEV RS flagship available only at the top of the range.

All CR-Vs are powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which produces 140kW and 240Nm. Drive is sent to the front wheels only in seven-seat models.

Honda backs its CR-V with a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, with five years of roadside assistance offered with each vehicle purchase.

Isuzu MU-X

The MU-X range starts just $100 above the CR-V at $47,400, though that’s before on-road costs are applied.

With plenty of seven-seaters to choose from, the range extends to $69,400 before on-roads for the top-spec four-wheel drive LS-T. Rear-wheel drive variants are also available throughout the MU-X lineup, while the range is estimated to start at $52,326 drive-away.

Two engines are available across the range. One is a 1.9-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder with 110kW and 350Nm, while the other is a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder that boosts outputs to 140kW and 450Nm.

Isuzu backs the MU-X range with a six-year, 150,000km warranty and seven years of roadside assistance. The company also offers five years of capped-price servicing.

KGM SsangYong Rexton

Three KGM SsangYong Rexton variants are available, and all have seven-seat capacity. The cheapest is the ELX, which is priced at a square $50,000 drive-away.

The Adventure and Ultimate cost $54,000 drive-away and $58,000 drive-away respectively, while the ELX received a $1010 price bump from last year.

All Rexton models are powered by a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder with 149kW and 441Nm, making use of a part-time four-wheel drive system and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

KGM SsangYong backs its Rexton with a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, while each new vehicle purchase comes with five years of roadside assistance.

Kia Sorento

The 10th-most expensive seven-seat SUV in Australia is the Kia Sorento, which in its cheapest form its priced at $50,680 before on-roads.

Kia offers the largest model range of any car on this list with the Sorento, with prices reaching $68,590 before on-roads for the most expensive non-hybrid option. The range is estimated to start at $54,090 drive-away, according to Kia’s configurator

There are two hybrid Sorento models available, and they’re priced at $70,330 and $73,330 before on-roads. The range-topping PHEV GT-Line AWD is the only Sorento with such a drivetrain available, and it’s the most expensive car here at $84,660 before on-roads.

Non-hybrid Sorento models are powered by either a 3.5-litre V6 in front-wheel drive guise or a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel in all-wheel drive versions.

Hybrids offer a 1.6-litre turbo hybrid four-cylinder engine in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive setups, while PHEV runs a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine teamed with an electric motor, lithium-ion battery pack, six-speed automatic transmission and on-demand all-wheel drive.

Kia backs the Sorento range with a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty and 12 months of roadside assistance from purchase, which can be extended for up to eight years if the vehicle is serviced by an authorised Kia dealer.
