We knew an all-electric Porsche Macan was coming and would be sold alongside the current model for a while, though we didn’t know for how long.
Porsche has now confirmed the two Macans could be sold alongside each other for around two years.
Sebastian Staiger, the Macan’s product line manager, told Autocar “no final decision has been taken” as legislation and emissions regulations may change.
That said, the company is assuming “2024 will be the [final] year” for the petrol-powered Macan range.
Macan EV
The new Macan EV is set to debut in 2022.
The existing Macan was given a mild facelift a few months back with a freshened up interior that ditched regular buttons for capacitive ones.
This update should help to keep the sales of Porsche’s second most popular model ticking along in regions where EV uptake is slow or non-existant.
Porsche and Audi are currently developing an all-electric architecture, known as Platform Premium Electric (PPE).
The first two models based on EV-only platform are the new Macan, and an Audi sibling that will be known as either the Q5 E-Tron or Q6 E-Tron.
Both of these electric crossovers will make their global debut in 2022.
It’s understood PPE will have an 800V electrical architecture, like the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-Tron GT, and support DC fast charging.
Photos of Macan EV prototypes indicate it will be a design evolution of today’s car, though it looks like it’ll feature headlights similar to those of the Taycan plus a more rakish “coupe SUV” rear end.
Petrol Macan facelift
When the Macan EV goes on sale, it will be the first electrified Macan model.
Unlike Porsche’s other family-friendly internal combustion engine cars, namely the Panamera and Cayenne, the Macan isn’t offered with the option of a plug-in hybrid drivetrain.
