The pinnacle in naturally-aspirated Porsche motoring, the 911 GT3 and GT3 RS, are already sold out in Australia despite the later not even being unveiled yet.
Demand for motorsports Porsche models has traditionally been high, and this time around demand is higher and supply is more limited than ever. It’s made the 992.1 generation into what will most likely become the rarest modern GT3 and GT3 RS.
Porsche Cars Australia’s head of public relations, Chris Jordan, told CarExpert the chances of an existing order falling through are extremely unlikely.
Mr Jordan said the GT3 allocation “is exhausted”. “If you went to a Porsche centre right now they will say we will put you on a list and in the unlikely event that someone drops out, maybe [you’ll get a car] – but it’s extremely unlikely,” he said.
The unlikeliness of getting an allocation for a GT3 is emphasised by the fact that the wait lists for people hoping a confirmed order will drop out is already in the hundreds nationally.
“The GT3 has always been a reasonably scarce model and the demand has been really, really strong this time around as it has always been,” Mr Jordan said.
“In the current market which is very hot, the demand has been significant but we just don’t get enough.
“We get more than our fair share in Australia because our proportionate GT product in our normal range is rather high but even then, we just don’t get enough.”
Although the number of cars coming to Australia remains an official secret, CarExpert believes there will be noticeably fewer 992.1 GT3 and GT3 RS models compared to its 991.2 predecessor.
We believe fewer than 100 GT3 models and around 40 or 50 GT3 RS models will come to our market in the 992.1 model’s life, all of which are already well and truly accounted for.
The GT3 and GT3 RS production slots are often around just one year of that generation’s 911 build (around three-and-a-half years), which significantly reduces the number produced.
Those wanting a Porsche GT car might find themselves in luck with the 718 Cayman GT4 RS, which could have its build time extended so current expressions of interest or orders can be met in 2023.
As it stands, most of the Australian 911 GT3 allocation will be delivered this year (with a few likely into 2023), while the new GT3 RS will be unveiled later this year and finish being delivered to our market by the end of 2023.
