In good news for both potential Honda Civic Type R buyers and those who have already placed an order, there’s more stock coming to Australia.
UPDATE, 05/05/2023 2:30pm – Honda Australia has confirmed an additional 500 units of the Civic Type R have been made available for customers in 2023.
It says estimated arrival times have been reduced by up to nine months with the latest orders now scheduled for a February 2024 arrival at Honda dealerships.
Customers on the FL5 Civic Type R Australia group on Facebook report they’ve been notified by Honda dealers more cars are coming, and many have had their estimated delivery time brought forward by several months as a consequence.
“Got a call today from dealer to advise Honda Aus has an additional 500 cars. My delivery date has been moved from Dec to June this year!” said one owner on the group based in New South Wales.
Multiple owners across multiple states have also reported their delivery times have been brought forward by six months.
Wait times for the Civic Type R, which went on sale earlier this year, had blown out to late 2024 as Honda confirmed the vehicle had been sold out for 20 months.
The Type R joins the Toyota GR Corolla, Volkswagen Golf R, and Hyundai i20 N on the list of hot hatchbacks where demand outstrips supply.
Toyota has confirmed there will be just 500 examples of the GR Corolla allocated to the Australian market, and says it’s working to ensure what limited supply there is will be snapped up by enthusiasts instead of scalpers.
“Competition for the car within the Toyota world is enthusiastic to say the least,” said Toyota Australia vice-president of sales, marketing and franchise operations, Sean Hanley.
Over at Volkswagen, deliveries of the Golf R 20 Years special edition were late last year pushed back to avoid extending delays for buyers waiting for the regular Golf R to touch down.
Initially on track to arrive during the third quarter of 2022, the 20 Years still hasn’t hit Australian shores.
Hyundai in 2022 closed orders of the i20 N pocket rocket as it works to clear an order backlog of more than 12 months. Waits for the i30 Hatch N had blown past 12 months late in 2022 as well.
Also contributing to the Australian hot hatch shortage is the impending death of the Renault Megane RS, and the recent death of the Ford Fiesta ST and Focus ST.
