After giving its base MG 4 a price cut of upwards of $10,000, MG plans to raise its price again… but not by too much.

MG announced last month its base MG 4 51 Excite would wear a nationwide price tag of just $30,990 drive-away between September 20 and October 31, 2024, a reduction of up to $10,425 depending on where you live.

Now, the Chinese brand has confirmed that from November 1, 2024 to January 31, 2025, the same model will be priced at $32,990 drive-away. The offer excludes fleet, government and rental buyers, and can’t be used in conjunction with any other offers.

“MG and its dealer network have seen a great response to the current promotional price, with strong demand to switch to the EV,” said a spokesperson for MG Motor Australia.

In addition to the price cut for the base model, MG has also been offering factory bonuses of $5000 on model year 2024 (MY24) MG 4s and $8000 bonuses on MY23 vehicles. This promotion is currently set to end on October 31.

While the MG 4 51 Excite’s price will be $2000 higher than where it currently sits, it will still be Australia’s cheapest electric vehicle (EV) – if not by much.

After cutting the regular drive-away price of its entry-level Ora Standard Range to $35,990 in April, GWM subsequently introduced a $2000 discount.

This promotional pricing will be valid until December 31, 2024, with GWM also including a free charging station valued at $1690 for some buyers.

That leaves the two rival electric hatchbacks to duke it out fairly evenly matched on price until the new year, although the MG is comfortably winning the sales race.

To the end of September, MG has registered 3772 new MG 4s in Australia this year, while GWM has sold just 901 Oras.

Sitting in between is the BYD Dolphin, which has notched 1740 sales. It received a $2000 price cut in June, bringing the base price down to $36,890 before on-road costs.
