A more affordable MG 4 variant with a smaller 51kWh battery will wear a razor-sharp sticker price of $38,990 beforeon-road costs, making it Australia’s cheapest electric vehicle (EV).

Deliveries of the entry-level MG 4 51kWh Excite will begin from the middle of August.

Its pricing, effective from July 1, means it will undercut MG’s own ZS EV Excite with the standard-range battery as well as the GWM Ora Standard Range, which are both priced from $43,990 before on-road costs.

It also undercuts the 64kWh Excite version of the MG 4, priced from $44,990 before on-roads.

The announcement also comes just days before BYD is set to announce pricing for its Dolphin electric hatchback, which it says will become Australia’s cheapest EV.

It’s unclear exactly what the BYD’s price tag will look like, though it’s likely to start with a ‘3’.

Photos of the new base model MG 4 have yet to be released, though government approval documents depict a vehicle with a different wheel design.

The WLTP figure for the UK-market 51kWh model is 351km, and this entry-level model produces 125kW and 250Nm. The 64kWh Excite bumps the range up to 450km and power to 150kW.

We’ll update this article when more information becomes available.
