Mazda pushing for more MX-5s in 'priority' Australian market

The Mazda MX-5 may be eight years old, but it’s still popular – so popular the company has already sold out its 2023 allocation of the RF.

The company’s local arm is pushing for more stock, citing Australia’s status as a “priority market” for the brand globally.

“MX-5 is one of Australia’s favourite sports cars with some of our most passionate owners. We are continually negotiating with Mazda Corporation to secure additional production that will satisfy customer demand,” said a spokesperson for Mazda Australia.

“On [the] current allocation [of the MX-5 RF], we are sold out into 2024, however as Australia [is] a priority market for Mazda Corporation globally, this may change as production into the future is confirmed and supply improves.”

There’s some good news for prospective MX-5 buyers, at least those willing to go without the RF’s retractable hardtop.

“There are pockets of unsold MX-5 soft-top inventory at some dealers and customers are best placed to contact their local dealership for availability,” said the spokesperson.

Mazda didn’t confirm how much stock of the soft-top is on hand, though it confirmed if you place an order for a soft-top not currently in stock it will be produced in November.

The company has already delivered 184 examples of the MX-5 to the end of April, up 42.6 per cent year-to-date.

In the sports car under $80,000 segment, the MX-5 is currently sitting behind the BMW 2 Series (202 sales), Toyota GR86 (211), Subaru BRZ (566) and Ford Mustang (647).
