Jaguar Land Rover is recalling 1729 examples of its 2019-20 Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque models due to an electrical fault with their mild-hybrid system.
“An electrical overload in the 48V electrical system may cause a failure of the metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET). Failure of the MOSFET may cause an electrical cascade failure, causing the DC/DC converter to experience an electrical short where the 12V circuit shorts to ground,” the company says in its recall notice.
“When the DC/DC converter experiences an electrical short to ground, the 12V electrical system will discharge, this will be indicated by a battery warning on the instrument cluster.”
Occupants may notice a burning smell and/or smoke streaming into the cabin from the DC/DC converter vent.
If there’s enough oxygen, a fire could occur which could cause injury or death to occupants or other road users.
If you own an affected Discovery Sport or Evoque, you’ll be contacted by Jaguar Land Rover and asked to visit a dealer to have this issue fixed.
The electrical failure can be fixed with a software update.
For more information, you can contact the Jaguar Land Rover Customer Relationship Centre on 1800 625 642 weekdays from 8am to 8pm and on Saturday from 9am to 4pm.
