The Ford Bronco is coming to muscle in on the Wrangler’s turf, so Fiat Chrysler is fighting back the way it knows best: stuffing a big V8 into the Wrangler.
Unveiled overnight, the Wrangler Rubicon 392 Concept features a 6.4-litre V8 with 336kW and 610Nm. It is hooked up to an eight-speed automatic and a full-time 4×4 system with a two-speed transfer case.
Pedal to the metal, the Rubicon 392 is said to have a 0-60mph (0-97km/h) time of under five seconds.
More importantly for Jeep fans, the concept carries the brand’s “Trail Rated” designation and features a clutch of modifications aimed at improving off-road ability.
These include Dana 44 axles, electric front and rear differential locks, and a 2.0-inch lift kit including new springs and shocks. With its 337mm of ground clearance, the Rubicon 392 can ford water up to 864mm deep.
The concept rides on 17-inch beadlock wheels shod with 37-inch mud-terrain tyres.
According to Jeep, the Rubicon 392 has approach angle of 51.6 degrees, a 29.5-degree breakover angle, and a 40.1-degree departure angle.
The Rubicon 392 is visually differentiated from regular Wrangler models by its prominent bonnet bulge, and custom-made half doors.
Bronze-colour tow hooks stand out against the grey exterior paint, while the interior features red leather seats with gold stitching.
While the Rubicon 392 is officially just a concept for now, Jeep acknowledges “enthusiasts have been clamoring for a V8-powered production Wrangler” and today’s concept “is an indication they may soon get their wish”.
If the Rubicon 392 does go into production, it will be the first time the Wrangler will be offered with a V8 engine since the 1981 Jeep CJ, which was available with a 5.0-litre V8 making 93kW and 298Nm.
