The Nissan GT-R is already dead in Australia, but it has survived in markets like Japan – though a report suggests the end is coming soon.
Japanese outlet Magazine X reports the 2025 Nissan GT-R will be announced on March 14, and it’ll be the swansong for the sports car that’s been in production since 2007.
A total of 1500 units will reportedly be produced, 300 of which will be Nismo models.
“We have decided to discontinue production because there will be many parts that will no longer be able to be manufactured,” the company reportedly told Japanese dealers.
The GT-R was axed in Australia in 2021 as it didn’t meet a new Australian Design Rule (ADR) that imposed stricter side impact standards.
The sports car finished its local run with 50 model year 2022 examples, including T-Spec and Nismo SV variants.
In 2023, Nissan revealed an updated GT-R for the Japanese market with a couple of special editions, a new front grille design and improvements to its aerodynamics, ride, noise and vibration.
Hyper Force concept 
Reports have suggested the GT-R will be replaced by an electric sports car, and Nissan previewed a particularly GT-R-like concept at last year’s Tokyo motor show.
Called the Hyper Force, the electric coupe sends 1000kW of power through an all-wheel drive system.
That’s quite different from the twin-turbo V6 throbbing under the bonnet of the current GT-R, but the Hyper Force features the car’s iconic stove burner tail lights and two drive modes called “R” and “GT”.
A report from Japanese outlet Best Car Web just prior to the Hyper Force’s reveal said that while the next GT-R would pack electric power, it would instead be a four-door à la the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GT.
The publication reported the R36 GT-R would debut in 2028.
