It’s never safe or responsible to go 73km/h over the posted speed limit, but flooring it right in front of police officers is especially foolish.

According to the NSW Police Force’s Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, a 19-year-old P2 provisional licence holder did just this, and he’s now been slapped with heavy penalties.

Police allege at around 11:35pm on Sunday, February 16, the P-plater “harshly” accelerated his Hyundai i30 N Line past Cumberland Highway Patrol officers conducting stationary speed enforcement on King Street in Guildford West.

He was allegedly clocked at 123km/h in a 50km/h zone.

When pulled over, he allegedly offered no reason for speeding and returned negative results to both alcohol and drug tests.

But while he wasn’t driving under the influence, he was allegedly committing other offences – chiefly, exceeding the speed limit by over 45km/h and also not displaying his P plates.

The driver will now have to pay a $3279 fine and cop eight demerit points.

His registration was cancelled for three months and his licence was suspended on the spot for six months, but he’ll face a further suspension due to exceeding his demerit point limit.
