Lexus has revealed a new concept car at this year’s Tokyo Auto Salon with the same powertrain as the updated Toyota GR Yaris, complete with an automatic transmission.
The Lexus LBX Morizo RR concept is powered by a new “high-output” version of the GR Yaris and GR Corolla’s 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine that produces 224kW of power and 400Nm of torque.
This is 3kW more than the limited-edition Toyota GR Corolla Morizo Edition’s 1.6-litre turbo three-cylinder produces, with an unchanged torque figure.
The turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine in the Lexus LBX Morizo RR concept is mated to a new ‘Direct Shift’ eight-speed automatic transmission with drive sent through an electronically controlled full-time all-wheel drive system.
All versions of the Toyota GR Yaris and GR Corolla to date have been fitted with a six-speed manual transmission.
At this stage Lexus hasn’t confirmed if it will offer a production version of the LBX Morizo RR concept.
Lexus claims this LBX Morizo RR concept was inspired by Toyota Motor Corporation chairman Akio Toyoda, who goes by the nickname Morizo.
It has unique front and rear bumpers which are claimed to contribute to “superior air flow”. Other exterior highlights include 19-inch multi-spoke aluminium wheels, yellow brake calipers, black mesh pattern grille, and a 10mm vehicle height reduction.
Inside there are “exclusive” sport seats with yellow seat belts, as well as “exclusive” alloy pedals.
The new Lexus LBX, which is based on the same platform as the Toyota Yaris Cross, is set to go on sale in Australia in the first half of 2024 exclusively with hybrid power.
At this stage Lexus hasn’t confirmed pricing of the LBX. This will be detailed closer to its launch.
The 2024 Lexus LBX will be available in two different trim levels – Luxury and Sport Luxury – at launch which will both be powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder hybrid powertrain producing a total system output of 100kW.
