Australian hydrogen fuel-cell carmaker H2X will launch its Warrego ute on the Gold Coast in November 2021.

Reservations for commercial and private buyers are open now, with deliveries expected in April 2022.

Three trims will be available, with prices starting at $189,000 before on-road costs for the Warrego 66, extending to $250,000 for the Warrego 90 XR.

There will be an option of either two- or four-wheel drive.

Based on the Ford Ranger T6 platform, the Warrego ute uses a hydrogen fuel-cell electric (FCEV) powertrain replacing the traditional internal-combustion engine (ICE).

66kW or 90kW hydrogen fuel-cell options power either a 200kW or 220kW electric motor, depending on trim level.

It also has a super-capacitor capable of producing between 60kW and 100kW, depending again on trim level, to provide auxiliary power for vehicle start-up, quicker acceleration, and accessories when stationary according to H2X.

The supercapacitor is similar to one used in the Lamborghini Sian Roadster, as it provides a faster-acting setup than nickel-metal hydride or lithium-ion battery packs alone.

Top speed of the base 66 model is limited to 110km/h, with the 90 and 90 XR models limited at 150km/h.

H2X claims the Warrego will be able to travel 500km with a 6.2kg hydrogen tank, and 750km with a 9.3kg hydrogen tank.

Refuelling the hydrogen tank is expected to take between three and five minutes.

All Warregos will be able to carry 1000kg in their tray and be able to tow 2500kg.

The Warrego has a redesigned front fascia and H2X badges in the rendered press imagery.

H2X suggests the Warrego is ideal for construction sites, mining locations, and other “extreme scenarios”.

The Warrego is the first of many FCEVs planned by the company over the next two years. We have already seen the Australia Snowy mid-sized SUV concept, as well as other medium- to heavy-duty FCEV concepts by the brand.

The company says it has secured $50 million in order requests for the Warrego ute already. This roughly works out to be 264 base Warrego utes.

These orders are not solely from Australia, but from around the world with countries such as the Netherlands, Germany and Malaysia pre-ordering the FCEV ute.
