GWM looks set to bolster its Tank range in Australia.
Along with the Tank 300 already confirmed for our market, the bigger and bolder Tank 500 looks likely to make the journey Down Under.
Although not firmly locked in for our market, the car is under “very serious consideration”.
“We think there’s potentially a market for this car in Australia, but we’re working on the business case with head office,” a GWM Australia spokesperson said.
“Ultimately we do see a good position for Tank 500 sitting above Tank 300,” they said, suggesting it could offer “significant value” if it does make it to our market.
Earlier this week CarExpert spied both a left-hand drive two-tone 500 plug-in hybrid in Melbourne, plus a camouflaged right-hand drive model. Were it to be confirmed for Australia, the car would serve as a flagship for the fast-growing GWM range.
3.0-litre mild-hybrid petrol six or 2.0-litre hybrid powertrains are offered, along with a plug-in hybrid. Under the skin the Tank 500 rides on an off-road capable ladder-frame chassis. The V6 model is available with locking front and rear differentials, among other off-road focused equipment.
The Tank 500 measures 5070mm long, 1934mm wide and 1905mm tall on a 2750mm wheelbase. In contrast, the Prado is 4995mm long, 1885mm wide, 1890mm tall, and has a 2790mm wheelbase.
Inside, the Tank 500 boasts a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
Upmarket details abound, like a crystal-look transmission shifter and an analogue clock.
Even without confirmation of the Tank 500, the GWM range will grow in 2023. The Tank 300 Hybrid is imminent, and a petrol model will follow before mid-2023.
The GWM Ora electric car will be here in April, while the GWM Haval H6 PHEV is under consideration for our market as well.
