Fiat has stopped bringing petrol-powered cars to Australia, dropping the ageing 500 from its lineup which now consists of light commercial vehicles and an electric hatch.
Following a report by Autocar that the Fiat 500 and its performance Abarth 595/695 siblings had been removed from sale in the UK, a spokesperson for Stellantis Australia told CarExpert “we are no longer bringing in petrol”.
This means the electric Fiat 500e, which is priced from $52,500 before on-road costs, is its only new car in showrooms, sold alongside the Ducato turbo-diesel van.
CarExpert has asked Fiat how many petrol-powered 500s remain in stock across the country.

At its core, the Fiat 500 is a 17-year-old model, having launched in 2007 and benefitted from a facelift revealed in 2016. Only a single variant remains in Australian showrooms, the $28,900 before on-roads Dolcevita.
Meanwhile, the 500e – marketed in some countries as the New 500 – is a ground-up model on an updated platform, available exclusively as an EV both overseas and in Australia, where it’s offered solely in La Prima guise for $52,500 before on-roads.
There were 133 Fiat 500e deliveries recorded in the first six months of 2024, against 157 new petrol 500 and Abarth 595/695 registrations.
Despite being more expensive than any version of the 500 or 500e, the Fiat Ducato – technically sold under the Fiat Professional banner – recorded 533 deliveries across the same period.
While the Fiat 500’s run with pure petrol power appears to be nearing an end globally, the carmaker announced in June that it would launch a new hybrid 500 ‘Ibrida’ on the same platform as the 500e, following reduced demand for EVs.
Fiat hasn’t yet disclosed drivetrain details for the 500 Ibrida due to hit Europe late in 2025 or early in 2026, though it’s expected to use the same 1.0-litre mild-hybrid three-cylinder engine the outgoing model has had overseas since 2020.
The Fiat 500 Ibrida hasn’t been confirmed for Australia, according to the Stellantis spokesperson.
