Honda USA is gearing up to reveal a new Accord, but when it’ll arrive in Australia isn’t yet clear.
The Accord sold Down Under (along with in Japan, and parts of south-east Asia) is produced in Thailand, and operates on what a Honda Australia spokesperson described as “a separate model lifecycle” to the American model.
That means despite Honda USA this week teasing its 11th-generation Accord, with a more aggressive-looking exterior and Civic-inspired cabin, the 10th-generation car on offer locally hasn’t reached the end of the road.
“Accord remains an important global nameplate for Honda, with a very loyal and valued customer base here in Australia, but it is too early for us to confirm any details about plans for the next generation model,” the Honda Australia spokesperson said.
“The current model will continue in Australia for some time yet and it continues to perform strongly as a supporting model in the line-up.”
Honda introduced the current Accord to Australia in 2019. It’s been a slow seller since launch, relative even to its rivals in what’s a shrinking segment.
To date in 2022, sales are up by 44 per cent relative to the same point in 2021. Honda has delivered 85 cars, and says “demand continues to exceed current supply constraints, particularly for the hybrid variant”.
It currently sits last in its VFACTS segment, behind the Peugeot 508 (106 sales YTD) and Hyundai Sonata (415 sales YTD). It’s also the slowest seller in the Honda range Down Under behind the Civic hatch and recently-discontinued Odyssey people mover.
The current Accord features a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo engine in the petrol model that delivers 140kW of power, while the 2.0-litre hybrid provides 158kW.
