The Cupra Born hatchback is the latest electric vehicle (EV) to be awarded a five-star ANCAP safety rating against the 2020-2022 testing protocols.
This result was drawn from testing conducted by Euro NCAP. The two authorities have harmonised testing protocols.
The Born scored 93 per cent for adult occupant protection, 89 per cent for child occupant protection, 73 per cent for vulnerable road user protection, and 80 per cent for safety assist.
ANCAP notes the Born achieved “solid scores in all four key areas” of assessment.
Maximum scores were awarded to the Born for its protection of child occupants in the two physical crash tests designed to assess the risk of injury to children in “age-appropriate” child restraints.
A maximum score was also achieved for the lower leg protection of pedestrians.
The safety authority also notes the Born’s active safety performance tests provided a “mix of results”. Its autonomous emergency braking (AEB) functionality works in forward-travel scenarios, but doesn’t react to pedestrians in reverse of forward-turning scenarios.
“It’s great to see another fully electric model enter our market with the maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating,” said ANCAP Chief Executive Carla Hoorweg.
“The momentum for safe and green models is growing, and this rating will provide further confidence to consumers and regulators to embrace safety and environmental credentials as a non-negotiable package.”
The 2023 Cupra Born has the following standard safety equipment on all grades in Australia:
- Seven airbags
- Autonomous emergency braking (AEB)
- Pedestrian detection
- Cyclist detection
- Blind-spot assist
- Rear cross-traffic assist
- Lane-keep assist
- Parking assist
- Adaptive cruise control
- Driver attention monitoring
The Cupra Born is the first mainstream electric car from the Volkswagen Group in Australia and will arrive next month.
It’s priced from $59,990 before on-road costs and is available only in e-Boost form with a rear-mounted electric motor producing 170kW of power and 310Nm of torque with a 77kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
As recently reported, Cupra Australia secured an additional 200 examples of the Born which will arrive later in 2023. This is in additional to the initial allocation of 400 examples.
