BYD will send an extra 750 electric Atto 3 SUVs to Victoria for delivery before June 30, and has opened up orders for an additional 1950 examples that can be delivered before the end of 2023.
The move is a response to the Victorian Government’s decision to quietly end a $3000 rebate for electric car buyers almost 12 months earlier than planned, in a bid to cut back on ballooning debt.
It’s not clear if all 2700 extra Atto 3s will qualify for the subsidy; the Government last week said there were 2775 subsidies remaining for Victorian electric car buyers who sign a contract before 6pm on June 30, 2023.

Residents of most other states and territories will still have access to rebates on some electric cars, including up to $6000 in Queensland, $3500 in Western Australia, and $3000 in New South Wales and South Australia.
Those subsidies are available to buyers from all brands, not just BYD.
“This is the first time EVDirect will be able to publicly flex its agile and impressive supply chain capabilities and I am delighted we can support Victorians so they do not miss out,” Luke Todd, managing director of BYD importer EVDirect, said on LinkedIn.

BYD currently offers the Atto 3 SUV in Australia, but its range will soon expand to include the Dolphin hatchback.
Pricing will be revealed in the coming weeks, although BYD has already confirmed it wants to offer the nation’s “most affordable” electric car.
