The BYD Dolphin is now $2000 cheaper in Australia across both of its variants, as the brand’s slowest-selling model chases more local sales.

BYD’s local distributor has quietly trimmed $2000 off the price of its Dolphin Dynamic and Premium grades, which are now priced from $36,890 and $42,890 before on-road costs, respectively.

This isn’t enough for the Dolphin to beat the drive-away price of the GWM Ora, with Australia’s cheapest electric vehicle (EV) priced from $35,990 nationwide until June 30.

Below is a list of the BYD Dolphin’s drive-away prices in each state and territory, based on its Australian website.

There appear to be no specification changes to the BYD Dolphin to coincide with the price change.

The BYD Dolphin Dynamic has a single electric motor, sending 70kW of power and 180Nm of torque to the front wheels, enabling a claimed 0-100km/h time of 12.3 seconds.

The Dolphin Premium upgrades to a 150kW/310Nm electric motor, reducing its 0-100km/h sprint to 7.0 seconds.

The Dynamic’s 44.9kWh Blade battery delivers a claimed 340km of WLTP driving range and can be charged at 60kW, while the Premium’s 60.48kWh pack increases these figures to 427km and 80kW, respectively.

Both grades of the BYD Dolphin are backed by a six-year, 150,000km warranty. Its high-voltage batteries are covered by an eight-year, 160,000km warranty.

Despite being the cheapest BYD on sale in Australia, the Dolphin has proved less popular than its siblings between January and May 2024, with its 1044 sales behind the Seal (3386 sales) and Atto 3 (3375 sales).

The similarly sized and priced MG 4 also has its measure in the sales race, with 2376 examples reported as sold year-to-date.
