BMW M has confirmed it’s going to be revealing a new car at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Set to run from June 23 to 26, the Goodwood Festival of Speed is held at Goodwood House in Chichester, West Sussex. The 2022 theme is “The innovators – Masterminds of motorsport”.
BMW M will be celebrated at the Central Feature, and the festival will showcase current and historical M cars.
“As BMW M, we feel honoured to play a very special role at this year’s Festival of Speed. For our 50th anniversary, we couldn’t imagine a better place to celebrate our products with fans of the brand,” says BMW M CEO Frank van Meel.
BMW XM 
M3 Touring
“I am particularly looking forward to unveiling a certain vehicle to the world’s public for the first time – a vehicle we have been waiting a long time for.”
The M car set to be revealed could be anything from the M3 Touring high-performance wagon, to the XM plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV. Both have already been heavily documented in prototype forms.
Already confirmed for the Australian market, the M3 Touring is slated for a reveal in June 2022, which lines up perfectly with the 2022 Festival of Speed.
It’s reportedly set to be powered by a 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engine producing 375kW of power and 650Nm of torque. This is the same engine as the higher-spec M3 Competition and M4 Competition.
The M3 Touring will come exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission and BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system.
When it’s revealed, the new long-roofed M car will be the first mass-produced M3 Touring in the model’s long and storied history. The company only ever built a prototype E46 M3 wagon in 2000.
Another M car BMW could be gearing up to reveal is the XM SUV, which will be the production version of the Concept XM and be powered by a V8 petrol engine mated to an electric motor.
The XM is claimed to be the most powerful M car ever and has total system outputs of 550kW and 1000Nm.
BMW XM 
At this stage, the XM’s primary focus is the US market, although it is on the local division’s mind.
In November 2021 a BMW Australia spokesperson said the “BMW M brand and BMW X range are highly significant to Australia – one in five BMWs sold here wear an M badge and BMW X vehicles represent more than 60 per cent of our total sales volume”.
“With that in mind, the BMW Concept XM has immediate appeal for our market. If the production model is made available to us, we will definitely offer it to our customers.”
M2 prototype
BMW revealed the current-generation 2 Series coupe at the 2021 Festival of Speed, so it could also be following it up with the high-performance M2 sports coupe.
The M2 has previously been spied in prototype form a number times and will reportedly have more power than the outgoing M2 Competition, which produces 302kW and 550Nm from its 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engine.
The regular M2, last seen here in 2018, put out 272kW and 465Nm.
There’s also reportedly going to be an even more powerful M2 Competition model which is rumoured to have its output increased to 335kW or even 365kW, with a six-speed manual transmission.
It’s unclear exactly what BMW will be revealing at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed, but more details will apparently be revealed in the coming weeks.
BMW is also gearing up to reveal the lightweight M4 CSL at the 2022 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa D’Este event on May 20, 2022.
