BMW M is set to debut an exclusive model wearing an iconic name, the latest in an onslaught of new product reveals coinciding with its 50-year anniversary celebrations.
As previously rumoured, BMW M CEO Frank van Meel has now teased on Instagram a vehicle that’s expected to be a special, coachbuilt M4 inspired by the 2015 CSL Hommage concept.
It’s expected to be revealed towards the end of the year.
BMW Blog reports it’ll be called the 3.0 CSL, dusting off the name of an E9-based homologation special from 1972, of which 1265 were built.
Based on the M4 CSL which was recently revealed, this reborn 3.0 CSL will reportedly feature more power, unique styling and less weight.
The 3.0 CSL will reportedly be available exclusively with rear-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission.
Under the bonnet is expected to be a more powerful version of the M4 CSL’s 3.0-litre S58 twin-turbo inline-six-cylinder engine, which could produce as much as 447kW of power.
For context, the S58 engine in the M4 CSL produces 405kW of power, which is an additional 30kW hike over the regular M4 Competition.
This additional power could slash the 0-100km/h sprint time to around 3.5 seconds, with a top speed exceeding 300km/h.
The M4’s undergone a crash diet, too, in the transformation to the 3.0 CSL, losing its rear seats, as well as featuring a simplified instrument panel and slimmer front seats. Expect lots of carbon fibre, too.
It’ll reportedly weight just 1550kg, which is 75kg lighter than the M4 CSL.
In the three teaser images uploaded to Instagram, the reborn 3.0 CSL has unique styling which is largely covered up a kaleidoscopic collage of previous and current BMW M vehicles.
What we can see is a different take on the double kidney grille on the front, dual round air intakes in the corners of the front bumper, a roof spoiler, and a large rear wing.
These design features pay homage to the E9 3.0 CSL from the 1970s.
There are also stickers on the camouflaged car that read ‘Ready’, ‘I like it rare’, ‘Insanely epic’ and ‘6MT FTW’.
The latter of these stickers is an acronym that’s most likely short for ‘six-speed manual transmission for the win’.

The reborn 3.0 CSL will reportedly be even rarer: BMW Blog suggests production will be capped at 50 units and potential buyers are already being approached, which means it could be sold out by the time it’s revealed.
It’ll be expensive too, with a rumoured asking price of between €600,000 to €700,000 ($A914,365 to $A1.06 million).
BMW has been commemorating 50 years of its M division with a swarm of new high-performance vehicles.

So far it has revealed the BMW M3 Touring, M4 CSL, M3 and M4 50 Jahre special editions, and the all-electric iX M60.
BMW has already confirmed it plans to reveal the new-generation M2 in October 2022, as well as a production version of the Concept XM plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV at the end of 2022.
Other new BMW M vehicles expected to be revealed this year include the M3 CS sedan, and a manual-equipped M4 GT/H.
