MG Australia has taken an axe to the pricing of its HS Plus EV plug-in hybrid (PHEV) ahead of a replacement touching down next year.

The two-car HS PHEV lineup is now $8700 cheaper, starting at $34,990 drive-away for the base Excite variant and $37,990 drive-away for the more expensive Essence.

Those prices are down from $43,690 and $46,690 drive-away respectively, following previous price cuts in April this year.

The discounts apply to 2022-build MG HS Plus EV models, with 2023 models sold out ahead of the arrival of the next-generation HS PHEV in the first half of 2025.

The HS Plus EV ranked in the top-10 best-selling PHEV models for the first half of 2024, sitting in seventh position with 307 units delivered.

It was outpaced by the rival Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and Eclipse Cross PHEV on 2422 and 1409 sales, respectively, while the recently introduced BYD Sealion 6 rival also pushed past it with 482 deliveries.

Even before this latest price cut, the HS Plus EV undercut its rivals. The Eclipse Cross PHEV, for example, opened at $47,790 before on-road costs, while the Sealion 6 opens at $48,990 before on-roads.

MG is still running out examples of the previous-generation petrol HS, too, with the Vibe priced at $29,990 drive-away and the Excite at $31,990 drive-away.

The outgoing HS Plus EV is powered by a combination of a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 119kW and 250Nm and a 90kW/230Nm electric motor, fed by a 16.6kWh lithium-ion battery.

It outputs a combined 189kW of power and 370Nm of torque, with a claimed electric range of 63km and fuel consumption of 1.7L/100km.

While details for the next-generation HS PHEV haven’t been confirmed for Australia, UK models pair a 105kW 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 154kW electric motor and a 24.7kWh battery.

On an unspecified test cycle, the new HS PHEV is said to be capable of an electric range of 121km.
