Volkswagen has revealed the new T7-generation Transporter van and Caravelle people mover which comes with more interior space and a range of electrified powertrain options.
The new Transporter range will launch in Germany at the beginning of next year, before arriving Down Under later in 2025.
Based on the Ford Transit Custom, the T7 Transporter will be offered with a choice of diesel, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and battery electric (BEV) powertrains.
A trio of turbocharged diesel variants produce 81kW, 110kW and 125kW, respectively, while the petrol-electric PHEV is good for 171kW.
BEV versions are not yet available to order, but Volkswagen has confirmed three model grades with 100kW, 160kW and 210kW, all featuring a 64kWh battery pack.
TDI and PHEV models are front-wheel drive as standard, although all-wheel drive is available for the 110kW and 125kW TDI variants.
EV models on the other hand will be rear-wheel drive only, with an all-wheel drive version planned for future release.
If that wasn’t enough choice, Volkswagen also offers a variety of body styles including three Transporter variants (Kombi, panel van and dropside), as well as a Caravelle nine-seat people mover.
Also available as part of the T7 range is the PanAmericana, a rugged version designed for off-road expeditions. Offered in both the panel van and Caravelle people mover body styles, the PanAmericana features all-terrain exterior trims, grained bumpers and a painted radiator grille.
The PanAmericana treatment also extends to the interior, bringing stainless steel side-step inlays, gloss black dash trim, and chrome interior door handles.
The new-generation T7 Transporter van is 146mm longer and 128mm wider than its T6.1-generation predecessor, with an extended load compartment to match.
An optional 400mm wheelbase extension is also available.
Vehicles with the normal wheelbase now have a stowage volume of 5.8m3, while long wheelbase and high roof examples will accommodate up to 9.0m3.
Maximum payload is up to 1.33 tonnes, and braked towing capacity has increased from 2500kg to 2800kg, depending on variant.
Interior standard equipment includes an electronic parking brake with auto hold function, 12-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system including DAB+, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and online connected services.
The Transporter was developed in conjunction with Ford’s Transit Custom, the latest in a series of commercial vehicle collaborations between the manufacturers.
Other co-developed models for the brands include the Ford Ranger-based Volkswagen Amarok, and the Volkswagen Caddy-based Ford Transit Connect.
