The updated Toyota GR Yaris is now on sale in Australia, featuring more power and torque, and upgraded safety technology and interior styling.
An eight-speed automatic transmission option – the first self-shifter for the pint-sized hot hatch – will follow midway through 2025.
The range opens at $55,490 before on-road costs for the GT manual, with the automatic costing an extra $2500. The base price has therefore climbed by $4100.

The Rallye has been replaced by the GTS, which costs $60,490 before on-roads – again, an increase of $4100, with an auto also available for an extra $2500.
The GTS carries over performance features from the defunct Rallye, including its Torsen limited-slip differentials and lightweight forged 18-inch alloy wheels shod in Michelin Pilot Sport tyres.
It also gets a new sub-radiator and an intercooler spray button.
Revealed earlier this year, the GR Yaris’ turbocharged 1.6-litre three-cylinder engine now pumps out 221kW of power and 400Nm of torque in all models.
This is up 21kW and 30Nm, and sees the GR Yaris match its larger GR Corolla sibling.
There’s a new Gravel drive mode that provides near-even front and rear torque distribution for “optimal grip on slippery surfaces”.
Exterior changes are modest – there’s a wider lower grille, said to improve cooling and aerodynamics – but inside some big changes have been made.
There’s a new “motorsport-inspired cockpit design”, with a new dashboard featuring a centre stack angled towards the driver, plus a driver’s hip point that has been lowered by 25mm to free up 37.5mm of headroom and therefore make it easier to drive with a helmet on.
Toyota has also repositioned switches for ease of use, even when the driver is harnessed to the seat, and improved visibility by moving the rear-view mirror and lowering the upper edge of the centre stack.
A new 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster sits ahead of the driver, while two USB-C outlets replace the lone USB-A outlet.
The new infotainment system uses an 8.0-inch touchscreen – up from 7.0 inches – and now features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Front and rear parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors join the suite of safety features.
Automatic models additionally feature adaptive cruise control and Toyota’s front and rear parking support brake features, which will apply the brakes if the vehicle detects you’re about to drive or reverse into something while you’re parking.
