The turbocharged, plug-in hybrid six-cylinder Mercedes-AMG E53 is available to order now, priced from just under $200,000 before on-roads.
The hottest member of the new W214-series Mercedes-Benz E-Class lineup – for now – has been priced for Australia.
The Mercedes-AMG E53 is available to order from today at Mercedes-AMG dealerships, priced from $199,900 before on-road costs.
When it was last available, its predecessor was priced at $173,869 before on-roads.
The E53 was revealed around 12 months ago in both sedan and wagon guise, though only the former is being offered here.
It’s making its in-person Australian debut trackside at the Australian Grand Prix today.

Though it features the same turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine as the previous E53, albeit updated, the new car builds on this further with a plug-in hybrid system.
The engine produces 330kW of power and 560Nm of torque, and is mated with a 120kW/480Nm electric motor integrated into the nine-speed automatic transmission, for total system outputs of 430kW and 750Nm.
Those outputs are up 90kW and 250Nm on the previous E53.
Power is increased to 450kW in Race Start mode, which utilises the full power of both the electric motor and petrol engine. That’s identical to the outgoing AMG E63, though torque falls 100Nm short.
Drive is sent to all four wheels through the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system.
The E53 is being offered here only with the AMG Dynamic Plus package, which shaves two-tenths off the 0-100km/h claim for a sprint time of 3.8 seconds. That’s 0.7 seconds quicker than the old E53.
The hot plug-in hybrid (PHEV) rides on steel suspension with adaptive two-valve adjustable damping, while standard active rear-axle steering sees the rear wheels steer in the opposite direction of the front wheels (at up to 100km/h) or in the same direction (at over 100km/h) to aid agility.
Stopping is handled by 370x36mm ventilated discs and four-piston fixed calipers up front and 360x26mm discs at the rear with single-piston floating calipers, aided by an electromechanical brake booster.
There are selectable Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Smoothness and Individual drive modes, with hybrid-specific Electric and Battery Hold modes.
The former sees the vehicle run purely on electric power, while the latter limits the use of electric power to conserve battery.
There’s a more aggressive front-end design compared to the regular E-Class, with a version of AMG’s vertical slat grille that features illumination, plus larger air inlets and front fenders that are 11mm wider on each side to make room for a wider track.
Inside, all Australian-market vehicles feature the MBUX Superscreen, which sees an infotainment touchscreen and a passenger display mounted in the same assembly.
To distinguish the AMG from regular E-Class sedans, there are also AMG sports seats and an AMG steering wheel. All of this is finished in Nappa leather.
The new W214 lineup is set to be topped by a new-generation E63, though it has yet to be revealed. This will take on the plug-in hybrid V8-powered BMW M5, though it may be down two cylinders on its Bavarian rival.
