Leapmotor is leaping into the throng of Chinese brands vying for Australian buyers’ dollars, and has released key details of its debut model.

The Leapmotor C10 is a mid-sized electric SUV due in Australia in November. Pricing has yet to be announced.

It’s one of a glut of Chinese mid-sized electric SUVs coming to our market, with the BYD Sealion 7, Geely EX5, Xpeng G6 and Zeekr 7X among the others that will take on the dominant Tesla Model Y.

While Leapmotor has yet to announce its retail locations for Australia, it boasts it will be able to tap Stellantis’ sales and service network.

Leapmotor International is a joint venture between Stellantis – the owner of Jeep and Peugeot, which has a 51 per cent stake – and Chinese firm Leapmotor, which has the remaining 49 per cent.

The company says two vehicles will headline its rapid global expansion: the T03 city car, and the C10. Only the latter has been confirmed for Australia.

Leapmotor International says they’ll be followed by at least one new model annually over the next three years. It released a product roadmap earlier this year showing it plans a small SUV for 2025, a small hatchback for 2026, and a light hatchback and SUV for 2027.

The C10 features a single, rear-mounted electric motor with 160kW of power. It’s rear-wheel drive.

    Efficiency

The C10 features a 69.9kWh lithium iron phosphate battery and offers a claimed WLTP range of 420km.

Leapmotor claims it takes approximately 30 minutes to charge from 30 to 80 per cent using DC power.

The C10 is dimensionally very similar to the Tesla Model Y.

While it hasn’t provided a full list for Australia, in China it’s offered with equipment like autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane centring, lane-keep assist and rear cross-traffic alert.
