The GWM Tank 300 is now available with diesel power, specifically the same engine found in the Cannon and Cannon Alpha utes, which also brings greater braked towing capacity.

Diesel-powered Tank 300s can tow 3000kg, up from 2500kg in the existing petrol and hybrid models.

The large off-road SUV range opens at $47,990 drive-away for both the petrol and diesel Lux, though the former is currently being offered for $45,990 drive-away as part of a promotion.

While the new diesel isn’t available with discounted promotional pricing, GWM Australia is offering three years of free scheduled servicing to customers who order one in March.

And pricing for diesel Tank 300 vehicles, which are already arriving in Australian showrooms, is actually cheaper than had previously been reported, to the tune of $1500.

The Ultra Hybrid remains the priciest Tank 300 at $60,990 drive-away, though it’s currently being offered with a $5000 discount until March 31.

With the addition of the diesel, GWM will not only have three powertrains on offer in the Tank 300 range, but it’ll also have a more direct rival to other body-on-frame off-road wagons.

But while the diesel can tow 500kg more than the petrol and hybrid, it still falls short of the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Toyota Fortuner’s 3100kg figures, as well as the class-leading 3500kg offered by the Ford Everest and Isuzu MU-X.

The Tank 300’s higher towing capacity pushes it into the “heavy off-road passenger vehicles” category under the incoming New Vehicle Efficiency Standard emissions regulations from the Australian Government.

The government says a “heavy off-road passenger vehicle” is an MC-category vehicle with a rated towing capacity of three tonnes or more, and featuring body-on-frame construction.

This puts the Tank 300 diesel in a category with a higher CO2 emissions target than that for petrol and hybrid models.

The other Tank 300 models, which are classified as “light off-road passenger vehicles” along with the rest of the GWM range, must meet a more stringent target of 141g/km.

GWM doesn’t quote a cargo capacity figure.

Nor does it quote a payload figure, but this can be calculated by subtracting the kerb weight from the GVM. The diesel is the payload winner of the range with a 600kg figure, ahead of the hybrid (420kg) and petrol (397kg).

    Servicing and Warranty

The 2025 GWM Tank 300 is backed by a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty and seven years of roadside assistance.

After the first service at 12 months or 10,000km, services are required every 12 months or 15,000km, whichever comes first.

GWM has yet to announce service pricing for the diesel, or for 2025 hybrid models. Petrol models’ service prices have increased for 2025.
