BYD, Australia’s second most popular electric vehicle (EV) brand, is gunning for the top-selling Tesla Model Y.
The BYD Sealion 7 mid-sized electric SUV is on sale now, priced from $54,990 before on-road costs.
It takes on not only the Model Y, but also a growing contingent of Chinese rivals including the Deepal S07, Leapmotor C10 and Xpeng G6.

Just one battery is available – a large 82.56kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack – but there’s a choice of single-motor rear-wheel drive (Premium) or dual-motor all-wheel drive (Performance) configurations.
Both variants have largely the same list of standard equipment, though the Performance includes a few extra niceties like heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel.

BYD Australia has yet to announce service pricing for the Sealion 7.
The company backs its vehicles with a six-year, 150,000km vehicle warranty and eight-year, 160,000km battery warranty, though there are some exceptions which you can view on BYD’s website.
The Sealion 7 has yet to be tested by ANCAP or Euro NCAP.
