BMW Australia may have axed plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions of its 3 Series and 5 Series, but it will offer such a powertrain in its new X3.
The BMW X3 30e xDrive will arrive during the first quarter of 2025, wearing a price tag of $102,500 before on-road costs.
That slots it between the petrol-powered 20 xDrive ($84,500 before on-roads) and flagship M50 xDrive ($126,900 before on-roads).
It also makes it $9300 cheaper than the outgoing X3 xDrive30e.

It will be sold alongside the electric iX3 M Sport and M Sport Pro, which are based on the outgoing X3.
The all-wheel drive 30e xDrive mates a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a 19.7kWh battery, an electric motor and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Total system outputs are 220kW of power and 450Nm of torque, while the 0-100km/h sprint takes 6.2 seconds.
While it’s up 5kW and 20Nm on the previous X3 xDrive30e, it’s 0.1 seconds slower to 100km/h.
BMW, however, claims electric range of 91km under the ADR 81/02 test cycle, an improvement of more than 50 per cent over the previous-generation model.
Combined cycle fuel consumption is 1.6L/100km, down from 3.2L/100km, while it produces 38g/km of CO2.
BMW says it can be driven in purely electric mode at speeds up to 140km/h.
The battery can be charged at up to 11kW, and supports both single-phase and three-phase AC charging.
It can be recharged from empty in two hours and 15 minutes, an hour and a half quicker than the previous model.
BMW says it has made various enhancements to the X3’s PHEV powertrain with the new generation.
In Hybrid mode, the combustion engine is started prior to merging onto a motorway to allow the driver to accelerate at full power; in Electric mode, the engine is completely disconnected from the drivetrain.

BMW claims that in 2025 it will offer 21 electrified vehicles in Australia, the most of any manufacturer in Australia.
While it has discontinued PHEV versions of its 3 Series and 5 Series and hasn’t opted to bring other PHEVs here like the X1, the X3 30e xDrive will become one of five PHEVs on the market.
It joins the X5 xDrive50e, as well as three high-performance M PHEVs: the M5 Sedan, M5 Touring, and XM SUV.
