The BMW M5 is going hybrid, but it won’t be going soft.
A user on the Bimmerpost forum known for leaking future product plans says the next M5 will feature a version of the plug-in hybrid powertrain debuted in the XM SUV.
In the XM Label Red, the setup combines a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V8 with an electric motor to deliver a combined 550kW of power and 1000Nm of torque. It’s all-wheel drive, and features an eight-speed automatic.
It also features an active anti-roll system, although it’s not clear if the lower-riding M5 will require the same tech.
Claimed electric range is up to 88km thanks to a 25.7kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
Whether the M5 will feature exactly the same version of the powertrain, or whether it’ll be held back slightly to give the XM some breathing space as flagship, remains to be seen.
The current model make 467kW of power and 750Nm of torque in its most powerful CS guise. It has a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, but no hybrid assistance.
Previous spy photos have indicated the M5 will have an interior that borrows heavily from the iX, with a curved dual-screen dashboard and minimalist look.
It’s also expected to feature a Touring body style, based once again on leaks from Bimmerpost.
