The 2023 Volvo XC40 has been leaked online, and this mid-cycle update features only the subtlest of visual changes.
Images were published early on the official Volvo Germany website and car configurator and shared by Spanish publication Cochespias.
This facelift is referred to as a 2022 model year vehicle for overseas markets such as Germany, but this update will come Down Under as a 2023 model year vehicle according to a Volvo Australia spokesperson.
It’s expected to arrive early in the second half of 2022.
The facelifted XC40 receives a redesigned front fascia with new daytime running light signatures and redesigned fog light housings borrowed from the C40 Recharge, set to arrive locally in the second half of 2022.
XC40 Recharge Pure Electric models also receive a slightly reworked blanked-out grille like the C40 Recharge.
There are new wheel designs across the range, with the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric model able to be optioned with the 19-inch five-spoke rims seen on the C40 Recharge.
At this stage the interior appears to be unchanged, but expect more leather-free upholstery options as Volvo is transitioning away from using cow-based leather in its interiors.
We don’t expect any significant powertrain changes for the facelifted model, but we could see more electrified offerings locally.
This is in line with Volvo’s current plan to only sell all-electric models from 2030 onwards.
Currently in Australia, the XC40 is available with internal-combustion engine (ICE), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and all-electric powertrains.

The PHEV and all-electric Recharge variants are only available in one highly-specified trim level at the moment. In other markets there are other trim levels available.
The XC40 Recharge Pure Electric is only available with a dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain producing 300kW of power and 660Nm of torque, whereas single-motor variants are available in other markets.
That’s in contrast with its Polestar 2 platform-mate, which offers both single-motor and dual-motor powertrains.

The current Volvo XC40 has been on sale in Australia since early 2018, with most recent models being produced at the Luqiao CMA Super Factory in China.
According to VFACTS, it’s currently the second top-selling small luxury SUV year-to-date with 3498 sales, behind only the Audi Q3 (4788).
