Is the Lamborghini Urus gunning for the Aston Martin DBX707’s crown?
When the DBX707 launched, it became the world’s most powerful SUV. We’ve known an updated Urus is in the works for a while now, and we know Lamborghini is in the business of making headlines, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see a new model try and topple the Aston.
The pre-update Urus recently ticked past 20,000 cars produced. A teaser for the updated Urus promises performance reaching a “new dimension”, and shows the hyper-SUV taking on the famous Pikes Peak hillclimb.
The camouflaged prototype wears different wheels to the standard Urus, and the front end appears more aggressive thanks to a bumper that borrows from the Huracan EVO supercar.
Exactly how Lamborghini will extract more performance from its SUV isn’t clear. We’ve seen PHEV prototypes running around, and the brand has previously said it’s launching its first hybrid series-production vehicle in 2023, suggesting a battery-backed Bull is likely to be part of the updated range.
At this stage it’s unclear what will be under the bonnet of the Lamborghini Urus PHEV, but it could share its plug-in hybrid powertrain with Porsche.
The Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid is powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with an electric motor and a 17.9kWh lithium-ion battery, with total system outputs of 500kW of power and 900Nm of torque.
These outputs are up 13kW and 50Nm on the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine in the ‘regular’ Urus, although that power outputs is still 20kW down on the DBX707.
Alternatively, Lamborghini could be preparing an Urus EVO. We’ve spied a more aggressive-looking Urus prototype with styling that looks suspiciously similar to that of the teaser car.
It’s not clear if the EVO will also be PHEV-powered. The prototypes don’t appear to have PHEV markings on them, suggesting an uprated take on the standard car’s twin-turbocharged V8 engine is likely.
Reports from the UK have suggested the EVO will feature more than 500kW. Stay tuned for more in the lead-up to launch.
