The upcoming Polestar 3 all-electric crossover will be manufactured in the United States, at the Volvo Cars facility in Ridgeville, South Carolina.
It hasn’t been revealed just yet, but the third vehicle in Polestar’s line-up is said to be “an aerodynamic electric performance SUV” that will “debut a new generation of electric vehicle architecture from Volvo Car Group”.
The teaser image supplied by the Swedish electrification specialist shows a low-slung, coupe-styled crossover.
The silhouette somewhat resembles that of the new Volvo C40 Recharge, though the wheel arches appear to be larger and more prominent in terms of their ratio to the vehicle’s body.
Other confirmed features include the company’s new Android Automotive OS infotainment system, which is already available in the Polestar 2.
The announcement marks the Swedish brand’s commitment to the American market, which along with China is one of the largest EV markets globally. Polestar already produces the 2 in China.
“Polestar 3 will be built in America, for our American customers,” said Polestar CEO, Thomas Ingenlath, “from now on, the USA is no longer an export market but a home market.”
Currently, the Ridgeville plant produces the S60 sedan, and will also be home to production of the next-gen XC90 SUV “around 2022”.
While there’s firm confirmation of US availability for the new Polestar 3, export plans are yet to be detailed.
Our guess would be, given the in-vogue SUV form factor, the Polestar 3 will be available globally including Australia.
Speaking of the Australian market, Polestar will launch Down Under in November, with the Polestar 2 the first cab off the rank.
Riding on the same CMA architecture as the Volvo XC40 and upcoming C40 Recharge (due in 2022), the Polestar 2 quotes outputs of 300kW and 660Nm from its dual-motor electric drivetrain.
It has a WLTP-certified claimed driving range of 470km from its 78kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
