The MG 3 enters yet another year unchanged, not that its age is affecting its sales one bit.

It’s now comfortably the best-selling light car in Australia. To the end of November 2021, a total of 12,911 MG 3s were sold, for a total share of 32.2 per cent of the segment – more than double that of the second-place Kia Rio (5299, 13.2 per cent).

Drive-away pricing for the base Core was increased during 2021, and the range now opens at $17,990 drive-away.

It’s been MG’s only non-SUV model in the local line-up since the discontinuation of the MG 6 in 2019, and it’s one of only two models – the standard ZS being the other – to lack the MG Pilot suite of active safety and driver assist technology.

MG will finally add another car to its local line-up late in 2022 with the MG 5 sedan, a Thai-built rival for the likes of the Toyota Corolla.

    Pricing

    • 2022 MG 3 Core: $17,990
    • 2022 MG 3 Excite: $19,490

    All prices are drive-away.

    Engines

The 2022 MG 3 is available only with one powertrain: a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 82kW of power and 150Nm of torque and mated exclusively to a four-speed automatic transmission.

MG still markets the MG 3 as the MG 3 Auto even though a manual was last seen in 2017 in the pre-facelift model.

    Fuel Economy

The 2022 MG 3 consumes 6.7L/100km on the combined cycle and requires 91 RON premium unleaded fuel.

    Dimensions

    The 2022 MG 3 measures 4055mm long, 1504mm tall and 1729mm wide, with a 2520mm wheelbase.

The MG 3’s total luggage space is 307L, increasing to a maximum of 1081L with the rear seats folded.

    Servicing

    The 2022 MG 3 is backed by a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.

Servicing is required every 12 months or 10,000km, whichever comes first.

MG has introduced a capped-price servicing scheme for its model range. The MG 3’s first seven services are currently capped at $243, $285, $279, $330, $243, $321 and $243, or a total of $1944 over seven years.

    Safety

The MG 3 has never been crash-tested by ANCAP, though it received a disappointing three stars when assessed by Euro NCAP in 2014. It also lacks any active safety features such as autonomous emergency braking.

All 2022 MG 3 models come standard with anti-lock brakes and front, front-side and curtain airbags.
