Mercedes-Benz’s electric vehicles won’t be mistaken for their petrol-powered counterparts.
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQE has been spied with less disguise and wearing production-spec lighting.
It’s set to debut in September 2021, with deliveries beginning next year.
The EQE’s new Electric Vehicle Architecture has allowed Mercedes-Benz designers to pen quite a different design from the brand’s traditional sedans.
The wheels are pushed out to the corners of the vehicle, with a particularly short front overhang.
The profile features a swooping arc, flowing up from the bonnet and ending at the stubby boot lid.
The design language of the S-Class-sized EQS has translated to the E-Class-sized EQE well, though the EQE looks to have a distinctive look of its own.
The smaller car also differs in not having a hatchback, though its booted rear bears more of a resemblance to a C-Class coupe than an E-Class sedan.
Overall, there’s no mistaking this for a similarly-sized, petrol/diesel-powered Mercedes.
That’s in stark contrast to some Audi and BMW EVs, which either share bodies with combustion-powered models (BMW i4, iX3) or feature traditional styling (Audi E-Tron).
The EQE will be built in Germany like the EQS, though the EQE will also be built in China. It’s expected to offer dual-motor all-wheel drive.
It’ll be sized more closely to the Tesla Model S than the EQS.
The EQS, in contrast, is expected to be longer and wider than a long-wheelbase S-Class.
Both the EQE and EQS will have corresponding SUV models that’ll be built in the company’s plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama from 2022.
