2022 Honda CR-V gets two new special editions

There’s a new Honda CR-V on the horizon, but before then the current car is getting the special edition treatment.

Following the likes of Haval, Holden, Mitsubishi, Renault, and Volkswagen – did we miss any? – Honda has given its mid-sized SUV a black edition.

The CR-V Black Edition gives the two-row CR-V a more monochromatic look, while the VTi 7+Luxe gives buyers of the three-row CR-V a new mid-range option.

Both models are available to order now and have been added to the company’s online configurator. They’ll arrive at Honda Centres nationwide over the coming weeks.

Priced at $44,600 drive-away, the Black Edition builds on the VTi with extra equipment and a raft of aesthetic changes.

While Honda has splashed gloss black trim both inside and outside the Black Edition, the special edition model features dark matte woodgrain inlays on the centre console, dashboard and doors.

Specification highlights include:

• Smoked LED headlights with active cornering lights

• 18-inch gloss black alloy wheels

• Dark wood trim on centre console, dashboard and doors

• Black instrument cluster surround
• Piano black steering wheel garnishes
• Piano black climate control, gear shift, door handle and touchscreen surrounds

That’s in addition to features found in the standard VTi, including:

• 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system
• Wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
• Autonomous emergency braking
• Lane-keep assist
• Road Departure Mitigation
• Adaptive cruise control
• Keyless entry and start

It misses out, however, on the $2900 cheaper VTi X’s hands-free power tailgate, front and rear parking sensors, automatic headlights and high-beam, and satellite navigation.

The Black Edition is available only with Crystal Black and Platinum White pearlescent exterior finishes.

Priced at $43,700 drive-away, the VTi 7 +Luxe looks like the regular three-row VTi 7 from the outside, but inside it’s received the extra niceties of the two-row VTi L AWD.

These comprise leather-appointed seats, heated front seats, and an eight-way power driver’s seat with two-position memory.

It’s available in four metallic shades – Ignite Red, Cosmic Blue, Lunar Silver and Meteoroid Grey – plus Platinum White pearlescent. There’s no extra charge for any of these shades, as part of Honda’s new Price Promise scheme.

The VTi 7 +Luxe slots in under the existing VTi L7, which adds a panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charging, LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers and privacy glass.

While most mid-sized SUVs offer the option of all-wheel drive, the CR-V is one of the few to offer the option of a third row of seating.

Others include the Mitsubishi Outlander and Nissan X-Trail, though the Mazda CX-8, Peugeot 5008 and Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace are stretched versions of the CX-5, 3008 and Tiguan, respectively, with a standard third row.

All CR-V models bar the base Vi use a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 140kW of power and 240Nm of torque, mated with a continuously-variable transmission.

The Vi uses a naturally-aspirated 2.0-litre with 113kW and 189Nm, also paired with a CVT.

All-wheel drive is available only in the two-row VTi L and VTi LX.

Honda has been teasing a sixth-generation CR-V in the US, which will be revealed on July 12.
