The all-electric Genesis GV70 luxury SUV has been revealed at the Guangzhou motor show, ahead of its Australian launch during the first half of 2022.
It’s called the Genesis Electrified GV70 and is based on a modified version of the platform used beneath the petrol and diesel GV70 range.
Available solely with fully variable all-wheel drive, the Electrified GV70 is also the performance leader of its range: with 160kW and 350Nm motors at both ends (320kW and 700Nm total), spiking to 360kW in the Boost Mode.
That means a (claimed) 0-100km/h dash in 4.5 seconds, which is 0.6 sec faster than the current twin-turbo V6 GV70 range-topper.
Genesis also says the GV70 EV premieres a new ‘e-terrain mode’; without specifying more details. We expect this involves torque allocation trickery from motors to wheels.
Without specifying the battery capacity, Genesis claims a 500km range on the Chinese efficiency cycle, which should equate to a range in Australia, using WLTP, around 400km.
As with other Genesis EVs it can handle up to 800V, meaning a 350kW rapid DC charger should take the battery from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in 18 minutes.
It also enables vehicle-to-load (V2L), outputting 3.6kW via an adaptor.
The GV EV also has a ‘Smart Regenerative Braking System 2.0’ that brings one-pedal driving, and active noise cancellation using four sensors and eight microphones.
Another cool system is Preview Electronic Control Suspension, which pre-configures its damper setting based on input from the front camera and the navigation system.
Stylistically the Electrified GV70 stays close to the ICE versions, though the show car is finished in a distinctive Atacama Copper matte paint. The ‘grille’ is different, and hides a charging point within, while the tailpipes are (naturally) removed.
The cabin also sports “a variety of eco-friendly materials”.
It’s the third part in Genesis’s global (and local) EV strategy, premiering seven months after the Electrified G80 sedan and three months after the GV60 crossover – which unlike the other pair uses a dedicated EV-only architecture.

When it does arrive, it’ll almost certainly be the most expensive GV70. The flagship GV70 3.5T AWD Sport costs $83,400 before on-road costs for context.
There will be no shortage of competition for it too: the Tesla Model Y, Mercedes-Benz EQC, BMW iX3, Audi e-tron, Jaguar I-Pace, and Volvo XC40 Recharge could all be classified as rivals.
