Korean luxury upstart Genesis has revealed an all-electric version of its G80 executive sedan at the Shanghai motor show, with an Australian launch confirmed for early next year.
Officially named the ‘Electrified G80‘, the marque’s first production EV claims to offer ‘more than 500km‘ of range on the older NEDC test cycle, or 427km on the South Korean EV certification system.
While range estimates have been released, Genesis hasn’t confirmed the car’s battery capacity.
The Electrified G80 will come as standard with all-wheel drive, using a dual-motor electric drivetrain with 136kW/350Nm e-motors on each axle, making for system outputs of 272kW and 700Nm.
Genesis says the Electrified G80 can sprint from 0-100 in 4.9 seconds, while it’s also capable of charging using 350kW fast charging to replenish the battery from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in “just 22 minutes“.
The G80 EV also features solar panels in the roof that can help generate power when parked or on the move.
Additionally, the Electrified G80 offers a Vehicle to Load (V2L) system which allows customers to draw 3.6kW from the vehicle’s battery to use electric appliances. Genesis says the quoted output is “higher than the level used by an average household”.
Beyond the mechanical and drivetrain changes, the G80 EV also features some subtle design differences compared to its combustion-powered siblings.
The ‘Crest Grille’ up front is now closed, featuring an inverted ‘G-Matrix’ pattern which Genesis says “emphasises the G80 EV’s mission for sustainability”. Make of that what you will.
Speaking of sustainability, Genesis has kitted out the interior with natural and recycled materials to bolster its eco-friendly credentials.
Examples include leather with natural dye in the seats, console and rear-seat armrests, recycled ‘forged wood’ trim inlays with materials sourced from furniture manufacturing, as well as recycled PET fabric used throughout the cabin.
The Electrified G80 will offer a handful of model-exclusive colour and trim options, including the Matira Blue exterior paint you see here as well as a Dark Green two-tone interior colourway.
While the G80 EV is the brand’s first all-electric model to reach production, the company is planning a number of new electric models including a triplet to the Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 utilising the Hyundai Motor Group’s dedicated EV architecture, e-GMP.
The e-GMP-based model should actually beat the Electrified G80 to the Australian market when it launches before the end of 2021.
The Shanghai reveal of the Electrified G80 also marks the company’s first foray into the Chinese market, with pre-orders of the standard G80 and GV80 kicking off at the motor show press conference using a China-tailored business model.
Genesis has also debuted the electrified X concept at the Shanghai motor show, following its global reveal on March 31.
The Electrified G80 and X concept will be displayed alongside the G80 and GV80 at Auto Shanghai.
