The BMW M4 Edition 50 Jahre anniversary edition is coming here in the fourth quarter of 2022, celebrating 50 years of the brand’s M division.
Just 25 units are coming, priced from $201,900 before on-road costs.
Unlike the 50 Jahre in Europe, the local version will be available with just one powertrain configuration and one colourway.
Our Edition 50 Jahre is based on the M4 Competition xDrive, which features a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine producing 375kW of power and 650Nm of torque.
It’s mated with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, and has a claimed 0-100km/h time of 3.5 seconds.
All Australian models are finished in Brands Hatch Grey metallic paint with staggered 19/20-inch ‘Style 826’ light alloy wheels finished in matte Gold Bronze, à la the M5 CS.
The classic BMW Motorsport heritage logo is used front and back and on the wheel hubs.
Inside, there’s Edition 50 Jahre BMW M lettering on the door sills and head rests, as well as a commemorative metal plaque on the centre console.
It costs an extra $19,400 over the standard M4 Competition xDrive coupe, however BMW includes as standard its M Compound Brakes with red high-gloss callipers and M Carbon bucket seats.
There’s also a standard M Carbon exterior pack, which includes carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) components such as the diffuser and rear spoiler.
BMW is also including the M Driver’s Package, which increases the top speed to 290km/h and comes with a complimentary BMW M Driving Experience Advance 2 course.
In other markets, the special edition M4 will be available in a wider range of colours.
In China, it’ll commemorate the Year of the Tiger with a choice of Fire Orange or Stratus Grey paint, while in Europe it’ll come in Carbon Black, Macao Blue, Brands Hatch Grey, Imola Red and San Marino Blue finishes.
These markets will also offer a choice of Orbit Grey or Gold Bronze matte-finish wheels.
The 50 Jahre edition of the M3 sedan, which will be exclusive to the US and Canada, has an even more interesting palette.
It’ll be available exclusively in Competition xDrive guise for the US and Canada, and each of the 500 vehicles will be finished in a range of finishes inspired by past BMW M colours.
Solid Cinnabar Red comes from the E30 M3, Techno Violet from the E36 M3, Deep Interlagos Blue from the E46 M3, Fire Orange from the E92 M3 Lime Rock Park Edition, and Limerock Grey from the F80 M3 CS.
BMW has gone all out for its 50th anniversary, revealing a hotter M4 CSL, setting a reveal of the M3 Touring wagon in June, and planning to introduce a production version of its Concept XM by year’s end.
There could be more coming, too.
The M3 CS sedan is expected to be revealed this year, and the M4 CSL is rumoured to be getting a manual transmission-equipped counterpart called the M4 GT/H.
BMW Blog also reports the division is working on an ultra-exclusive M4 inspired by the 2015 CSL Hommage concept.
