BMW has given its coupe flagship a price cut for 2022.

The 8 Series range now kicks off well below the $200,000 mark thanks to a $25,000 price cut for the 840i, although pricing has remained consistent higher up the range.

There are three body styles offered: a conventional two-door coupe or convertible, and a four-door Gran Coupe with more space for luggage and passengers.

    Prices

    • 2022 BMW 840i: $182,900 (-$25,000)
    • 2022 BMW 840i Gran Coupe: $170,900 (-$25,000)

    • 2022 BMW M8 Competition Gran Coupe: $354,900

    All prices exclude on-road costs.

    Engines

Power in the BMW 840i comes from a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine with 250kW of power and 500Nm of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive.

Moving to the M850i gets you a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine with 390kW of power and 750Nm of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.

The range-topping M8 Competition also has a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, but ups the outputs to 460kW and 800Nm, mated once again to an eight-speed auto and all-wheel drive.

    Fuel Economy

The BMW 840i Convertible uses 7.7L/100km on the combined cycle, compared to 7.7L/100km for the coupe and 8.0L/100km for the Gran Coupe.

The BMW M850i xDrive Convertible uses a claimed 10.6L/100km on the combined cycle. The coupe uses 10.4L/100km, the Gran Coupe uses 10.7L/100km.

The BMW M8 Competition uses 10.4L/100km, the Gran Coupe uses 10.7L/100km.

    Dimensions

The 2022 BMW 8 Series coupe measures 4843mm long, 1902mm wide and 1341mm tall, with a 2822mm wheelbase.

The Convertible is the same width, height, and wheelbase, but the roof is 2mm lower.

The Gran Coupe measures 5074mm long, 1932mm wide and 1401mm tall, with a 3023mm wheelbase.

    Safety

There’s no ANCAP or Euro NCAP crash rating for the 8 Series.

It wants for nothing when it comes to safety gear, however, both active and passive. There’s autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane-keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, reverse AEB, and one of the best surround-view cameras in the business.

There’s also 10 airbags, including knee airbags for both front passengers.

Given every BMW built on a variation of the CLAR underpinnings used for the 8 Series has scored five stars in crash testing, there’s no reason to assume the 8 Series would be any different.

    Servicing and Warranty

The 8 Series range is backed by the same three-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty as the rest of the BMW line-up.

Maintenance is required every 12 months or 15,000km. BMW includes the price of its more basic prepaid service pack in the purchase price, although an all-inclusive package with consumables covered costs $3830 for five years.
