2021 Toyota Yaris Cross price and specs

Toyota has locked in pricing for its smallest SUV.

The 2021 Toyota Yaris Cross will kick off at $26,990 before on-road costs for the petrol-powered GX, with pricing extending to $37,990 before on-roads for the hybrid all-wheel drive Yaris Cross Urban.

Based on the same TNGA underpinnings as the Yaris city hatchback that recently arrived in Australia, the Yaris Cross will slot in below the strong-selling mid-sized RAV4 in the Toyota Australia line-up.

It’ll be joined by a larger Corolla Cross late in 2022, at which point Toyota will have a full-strength SUV range.

Like the Yaris, the higher-riding Yaris Cross will feature a full suite of active safety features in even the base model. Hybrid power is available across the range at a $2000 premium over the base petrol engine.

An all-wheel drive hybrid system is also available at a $3000 premium over the regular hybrid. Toyota doesn’t offer all-wheel drive on the regular Yaris.

The 2021 Yaris Cross will be in showrooms from November 2.

Engines

The petrol Toyota Yaris Cross is powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine with 88kW of power and 145Nm of torque.

It’s front-wheel drive, and is exclusively available with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) featuring Toyota’s clever mechanical launch gear.

Two-wheel drive hybrid models are also powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine mated with two electric motors for a combined power output of 85kW. The internal-combustion engine alone outputs 67kW and 120Nm.

The all-wheel drive Yaris Cross hybrid adds a third electric motor. It’s mounted on the rear axle and springs into action to provide better traction when slip is detected at the front.

It has the same power output as the two-wheel drive hybrid.

Fuel Economy

The Toyota Yaris Cross petrol has a claimed combined fuel consumption figure of 5.4L/100km.

The front-wheel drive hybrid Yaris Cross has a claimed combined fuel economy figure of 3.8L/100km.

The all-wheel drive hybrid Yaris Cross has a claimed fuel economy figure of 4.0L/100km on the combined cycle.

Safety

The Yaris Cross hasn’t been tested by ANCAP or Euro NCAP yet.

However, given the Yaris hatchback scored top marks when it was tested in August, a five-star rating is likely.

The Yaris Cross will feature Toyota’s latest autonomous emergency braking system with pedestrian/cyclist detection and front cross-traffic assist, emergency steering assist, lane-keeping assist, road sign assist, and auto high-beam.

It will also features all-speed adaptive cruise control, and a reversing camera. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert is reserved for the more expensive GXL and Urban.

There are eight airbags, including the same centre airbag debuted in the Yaris hatchback.

The Yaris Cross will be the first Toyota to automatically dial emergency services and relay your location in an accident thanks to Toyota Connected Services, which is reliant on a SIM card.

Dimensions

The 2021 Toyota Yaris Cross measures 4180mm long, 1765mm wide and 1560mm tall, with a 2560mm wheelbase.

Boot space in two-wheel drive models is 390L, and 314L in all-wheel drive models due to the electric motor and related hardware under the boot floor.

Two-wheel drive models have a torsion beam rear suspension, while the all-wheel drive model has a multi-link setup.

Although it bears the Yaris name, the Cross has been jacked up by 30mm, and is 90mm taller and 20mm wider than the micro hatch. It’s also a considerable 240mm longer, despite sharing the same wheelbase.
