Toyota has revealed an all-new SUV called the Corolla Cross, set to hit Australian showrooms during the second half of 2022.
Local details are scant for the time being, though Toyota Australia says the Corolla Cross will be available locally with both petrol and petrol-electric hybrid powertrains.
Following in the footsteps of the smaller Yaris Cross, which is due Down Under before the end of this year, the Corolla Cross wears the company’s top-selling nameplate while wearing unique body panels and an elevated ride height, slotting between the C-HR and RAV4 in the global portfolio.
Like the C-HR and Corolla namesake, the Corolla Cross rides on Toyota’s GA-C architecture, which aims to provide engaging dynamics, comfortable ride, as well as a high level of structural rigidity.
The new crossover also promises “a spacious cabin, easy entry into and exit from the car and excellent luggage space, as well as a high level of safety equipment inherited from Corolla hatch and sedan”.
“Corolla Cross is not only stylish and versatile, it delivers the superior practicality demanded by customers in this segment including the high driving position, great visibility, spacious interior and ample head clearance,” said Sean Hanley, vice president for sales and marketing at Toyota Australia.
The reveal and local confirmation of the Corolla Cross comes off the back of a very successful 12-18 months for Toyota, particularly for its SUV range.
With SUVs and crossovers now accounting for almost 50 per cent of the overall Australian new car market, Toyota now commands a 19.6 per cent share of new vehicle sales thanks in part to a 2.3 per cent increase in crossover sales.
The new RAV4 has seen unprecedented demand, particularly for hybrid models, with wait times at one point stretching out to 6-9 months.
