It's a rare event for the Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series to be updated and, seeing as it got an update last year, there are no changes for 2021.
Updates don’t come around often for the venerable Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series, and there are none to speak of for 2021.
It received a standard 6.1-inch infotainment system across the range last year, which includes Bluetooth and satellite navigation.
The SUV and ute range is unchanged for 2021, including the pricing. It starts at $67,400 before on-road costs for the Workmate wagon, topping out at $75,600 before on-roads for the GXL Double Cab.
There’s really nothing else like the 70 Series on the market, with its turbo-diesel V8 engine, mandatory manual transmission, and styling that’s changed little since its introduction back in 1985.
All prices exclude on-road costs.
All 2021 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series models are four-wheel drive and are powered by a 4.5-litre turbo-diesel V8 engine producing 151kW of power and 430Nm of torque. It’s mated to a five-speed manual transmission
Toyota claims a combined cycle fuel economy rating of 10.7L/100km for all 2021 LandCruiser 70 Series variants.
Troop Carrier models feature a 180L fuel tank, while all others use a 130L tank.
The 2021 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series measures 4870mm long in wagon form, 5210mm in the WorkMate Troop Carrier, and 5220mm in the GXL Troop Carrier and all single and double cab-chassis models.
The exception is the GXL single cab-chassis, which is the longest of the range at 5230mm.
Height varies considerably between models. The shortest is the GXL wagon at 1940mm, followed by the GXL double cab-chassis (1945mm), GX and GXL single cab-chassis and WorkMate wagon (1955mm), WorkMate double cab-chassis (1960mm), WorkMate single cab chassis (1970mm), and both Troop Carrier models (2115mm)
All models are 1870mm wide excluding the mirrors, except for all WorkMate models and the GXL Troop Carrier which measure 1790mm.
Kerb weight ranges between 2165kg (GX single cab-chassis) and 2325kg (GXL Troop Carrier).
All models have a braked towing capacity of 3500kg and an unbraked towing capacity of 750kg.
The 2021 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series requires servicing every six months or 10,000km, whichever comes first. The first four services are capped at $360 each.
All models are covered by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.
The LandCruiser 70 Series was tested by ANCAP back in 2016 and received five stars, however this was for the single cab-chassis variant only.
If tested today, it’s unlikely the LandCruiser would score five stars due to a lack of active safety technology such as autonomous emergency braking.
The single cab-chassis variant has dual front and curtain airbags plus a driver’s knee airbag, however the other 70 series models only have dual front airbags.
The WorkMate comes standard with the following features:
The GX single cab-chassis adds 16-inch alloy wheels and fender flares.
GXL variants add over the GX:
The GXL Troop Carrier drops back to 16-inch steel wheels.
