2021 MG HS PHEV price and specs

Having added a new entry-level Core variant to the range last year, MG has priced its new HS SUV flagship for Australia.

The2021 MG HS Plug-in Hybrid is the second piece in MG’s hybrid and electric puzzle Down Under, and kicks off at $46,990 drive-away.

UPDATE, 4/3/2021: MG Motor Australia has updated the combined power and torque figures for the plug-in hybrid powertrain.

That undercuts rivals such as the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV ($47,990 before on-roads) and Ford Escape ST-Line PHEV ($52,490 before on-roads).

Despite its low entry price, the HS PHEV packs a competitive 52km of all-electric range from its lithium-ion battery pack.

Just one trim level is offered in Australia, and it comes with the works. The MG HS PHEV is in local showrooms now.

Engine

Power in the MG HS PHEV comes from the combination of a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and an electric motor on the front axle.

Combined, they pump out 189kW of power and 370Nm of torque.

The lithium-ion battery feeding the electric motor has a 16.6kWh capacity.

Fuel Economy

The 2021 MG HS Plug-in Hybrid uses a claimed 1.7L/100km on the combined cycle.

That figure assumes a significant portion of electric-only driving.

Dimensions

The 2021 MG HS measures 4574mm long, 1685mm talland 1876mm wide.

The MG HS’s total luggage space is 463L, increasing to a maximum of 1275L with the second row folded.

Servicing

The 2021 MG HS Plug-In Hybrid is covered by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty and an eight-year, 160,000km battery warranty.

MG doesn’t currently offer capped-price servicing for the HS.

Safety

When the MG HS was tested by ANCAP in 2019, it received a rating of five stars.

That rating was based on an adult occupant protection score of 92 per cent, child occupant protection of 83 per cent, pedestrian protection of 64 per cent and safety assist of 77 per cent.

All 2021 MG HS models come standard with the MG Pilot suite of safety features. This includes:

• Autonomous emergency braking with forward-collision warning
• Lane-keeping assist
• Lane-departure warning
• Adaptive cruise control
• Rear cross-traffic alert
• Blind-spot monitoring.

There are also front, front-side and front-curtain airbags.
