It’s the chariot of choice for everyone from rappers to Kardashians to even the Queen of Jordan. Now, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class has gotten a little more accessible.
The turbo-diesel 2021 Mercedes-Benz G400d joins the Mercedes-AMG G63 in the redesigned, second-generation G-Class range.
Arriving in July 2021, the G400d will be priced at $233,900 before on-road costs, or $56,000 less than its petrol-powered AMG counterpart.
Under the bonnet is Mercedes-Benz’s OM 656 engine, a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel inline-six producing 243kW of power and 700Nm of torque.
Fuel economy is rated at 9.5L/100km on the ADR combined cycle, while 0-100km/h takes 6.4 seconds.
This engine is also used in the Mercedes-Benz GLS400d, among other vehicles from the three-pointed star brand.
The body-on-frame off-roader has three differential locks for its all-wheel drive system and adaptive suspension, the latter of which also helps with its on-road comfort.
The G400d has a stainless steel exterior package, which includes the running boards and spare wheel cover.
Standard equipment also includes a 15-speaker Burmester surround-sound system, tri-zone climate control, and a surround-view camera.

Engines
The Mercedes-Benz G400d is powered by a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel inline six-cylinder engine producing 243kW of power and 700Nm of torque.
The Mercedes-AMG G63 is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre petrol V8 engine producing 430kW of power and 850Nm of torque.
Both models are all-wheel drive and use a nine-speed automatic transmission.
The G400d has a 0-100km/h time of 6.4 seconds, while the G63 AMG takes 4.5 seconds.
Fuel Economy
The 2021 Mercedes-Benz G400d uses 9.5L/100km on the combined cycle, while the G63 uses 13.1L/100km and requires 98RON premium unleaded fuel.

Dimensions
The 2021 Mercedes-Benz G400d measures 4606mm long (4817mm including the spare wheel), 1969mm tall and 1931mm wide.
The G63 measures 4873mm long, 1966mm tall and 2013mm wide.
Servicing and Warranty
The 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class range is covered by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.
Mercedes-Benz also offers a choice of three-, four- or five-year servicing plans. In the G63, these cost $2600, $4350 and $4950.
Prices have yet to be announced for the G400d.
Safety
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has a five-star rating from ANCAP, based on testing conducted in 2019.
It received score of 90 per cent for adult occupant protection, 85 per cent for child occupant protection, 78 per cent for vulnerable road user protection and 73 per cent for safety assist.
