The Ford Mustang has received a marginal price increase across its range and standard FordPassConnect, while there’s been a changing of the guard at the top of the range.

    Production of the Herrod Performance-tuned, supercharged R-Spec has come to an end, and the Mach 1 now serves as the flagship Mustang.

    It features slightly more power, plus standard MagneRide dampers and retuned steering and exhaust.

    It also features a rear axle cooler and lower diffuser from the Shelby GT500, plus an intake manifold and engine oil cooler from the Shelby GT350.

    What it doesn’t include is a Torsen rear limited-slip differential, adaptive cruise control or rear parking sensors, all items that were originally listed in Ford’s promotional material.

    Ford is now reaching out to Mach 1 customers who were disappointed these features weren’t on their vehicles.

    The Mustang is the latest Ford to gain FordPassConnect, which allows you to use the FordPass app on your phone to locate, lock, unlock and remotely start the vehicle.

    This generation of Mustang – introduced in 2015 – is the first to be built in right-hand drive instead of converted locally.

    It was a wise move, as the Mustang quickly snatched the title of Australia’s best-selling sports car and has yet to relinquish it.

    Engines

    The 2021 Ford Mustang High Performance uses a turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine producing 236kW of power and 448Nm of torque, mated to either a six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmission.

    The 2021 Ford Mustang GT uses a naturally-aspirated 5.0-litre V8 engine producing 339kW and 556Nm.

    It’s also mated to either a six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmission.

    The Mach 1 also uses a naturally-aspirated 5.0-litre V8, albeit with 345kW of power and 556Nm of torque. It uses the same 10-speed automatic as the GT, though the six-speed manual is sourced from Tremec.

    Fuel Economy

    The 2021 Ford Mustang High Performance consumes 8.8L/100km on the combined cycle with the manual transmission and 9.6L/100km with the automatic transmission.

    The 2021 Ford Mustang GT consumes 13L/100km on the combined cycle with the manual transmission and 12.7L/100km with the automatic. The Mach 1’s fuel economy is 13.9L/100km with the manual and 12.4L/100km with the auto.

    The four-cylinder Mustang High Performance runs on 91RON regular unleaded fuel and has a 59L fuel tank, while Ford recommends 98RON premium unleaded fuel for V8 models which use a 61L fuel tank.

    Dimensions

    The 2021 Ford Mustang measures 4789mm long, 1387mm tall, and 1916mm wide.

    The Mach 1’s exterior dimensions are slightly different, at 4797mm long, 1403mm tall and 1916mm wide.

    Servicing and Warranty

    All 2021 Ford Mustang models require servicing every 12 months or 15,000km, whichever comes first.

    In addition to a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, Ford offers capped price servicing for four years or 60,000km.

    The maximum service cost is $299.

    Safety

    The Ford Mustang has a three-star rating from ANCAP based on testing conducted in 2017.

    That rating was based on an adult occupant protection score of 72 per cent, child occupant protection of 32 per cent, pedestrian protection of 78 per cent, and safety assist of 61 per cent.

    All 2021 Ford Mustang models come standard with the following safety features:

    The Mach 1 loses adaptive cruise control, front fog lights and rear parking sensors but adds MagneRide suspension.
