Major updates don’t come around too often for the venerable Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series, which is arguably part of its charm.
The 1985-vintage ute and SUV range has picked up some modern touches for 2020, however. Chief among these is a 6.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with satellite navigation and Bluetooth, now standard range-wide.
Other upgrades include two USB port and a 12V accessory power input up front, as well as a larger smartphone holder and a cupholder in the passenger door.
Otherwise, the old girl is the same as before, except in terms of pricing.
Across the board, prices are up by either $2360 or $2410, depending on the variant. Check out the list below for the price increases and the new list prices.

Engines
All 2020 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series models are four-wheel drive and are powered by a 4.5-litre turbo-diesel V8 engine producing 151kW of power and 430Nm of torque. It’s mated to a five-speed manual transmission.
Fuel Economy
Toyota claims a combined cycle fuel economy rating of 10.7L/100km for all LandCruiser 70 Series variants.
Troop Carrier models feature a 180L fuel tank, while all others use a 130L tank.
Dimensions
The 2020 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series measures 4870mm long in wagon form, 5210mm in the WorkMate Troop Carrier, and 5220mm in the GXL Troop Carrier and all single and double cab chassis models.
The exception is the GXL single cab chassis, which is the longest of the range at 5230mm.
Height varies considerably between models. The shortest is the GXL wagon at 1940mm, followed by the GXL double cab chassis (1945mm), GX and GXL single cab chassis and WorkMate wagon (1955mm), WorkMate double cab chassis (1960mm), WorkMate single cab chassis (1970mm), and both Troop Carrier models (2115mm)
All models are 1870mm wide excluding the mirrors, except for all WorkMate models and the GXL Troop Carrier which measure 1790mm.
Kerb weight ranges between 2165kg (GX single cab chassis) and 2325kg (GXL Troop Carrier).
Safety
The LandCruiser 70 Series has an ANCAP safety rating of five stars from 2016, though that applies only to the single cab-chassis variants.
The 2016 rating was based on a frontal offset score of 14.75 out of 16 and a side impact score of 16 out of 16. Whiplash and pedestrian protection were rated Good and Marginal, respectively.
Under the current methodology, the 70 Series wouldn’t receive five stars due to the lack of active safety technology like autonomous emergency braking, while the double cab chassis, wagon and Troop Carrier variants would likely have missed out on a five-star rating if they were tested back in 2016 as they have fewer airbags.
The single cab chassis has dual front and curtain airbags plus a driver’s knee airbag, while all other 70 Series models have only dual front airbags. Other standard safety equipment includes the expected traction control, stability control and anti-lock brakes.
Standard Equipment

- Four-speaker sound system (wagon and Troop Carrier only)
The GXL Troop Carrier drops back to 16-inch steel wheels.
