Even as Porsche looks to the future with the all-electric Taycan and its E-Hybrid models, it isn’t forgetting its storied past.
The company has revealed a special edition of its iconic 911, the Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition, that’s a tribute to the early days of the 911 line.
Priced at $395,300 before on-road costs, it touches down in the fourth quarter of this year. Just 992 examples will be built, mirroring the series code.
Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur is delving into Porsche’s past and will release three more special heritage edition Porsches, while also making various elements of the Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition available in a Heritage Design package.
Retro touches on the Heritage Design Edition include spear-shaped graphics on the front wings, Porsche’s 1963 crest on the bonnet, wheel centres and throughout the interior, and a Porsche Heritage badge at the rear. The latter is designed to look like those affixed to Porsche 356s in the past when they reached 100,000km.
As seen in the featured example, you can also choose a start number between 0 and 99.
The special edition’s 20- and 21-inch alloy wheels are reminiscent of the Fuchs wheels that first appeared on the 1967 911. They’re optional on all 911s.
You can have the special edition painted in solid Black and Guards Red, in the greyish Crayon, or the metallic GT Silver. However, the signature colour for the Heritage Design Edition is the delicious Cherry Red. Porsche points out it used red extensively in its signage and literature in the 1950s.
The interior will also have you seeing red – a lot of it. Though it’ll be available in a black and Atacama Beige colourway, the signature interior weds brash, Bordeaux Red leather on the dash with Atacama Beige leather on the seats.
In a nod to Porsches of the 1950s, there’s also corduroy used on the seats and the door trims. There’s also the de rigueur special edition metal badge with the car’s individual number.
As it looks back in time, Porsche also empowers you to tell the time by including a special edition watch with every Heritage Design Edition. It has a face inspired by the speedometer and tachometer of the Porsche 356 and the first 911 Targa, while the strap is made of genuine Porsche interior leather.
As with the regular Targa 4S, the Heritage Design Edition uses a turbocharged 3.0-litre flat-six engine which sends 331kW and 530Nm to all four wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Porsche claims a 0-100km/h time of less than 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 304km/h.
If you miss out on this special edition, Porsche promises the next heritage edition model will arrive sometime next year.
