About the Nissan Patrol
bstaplet purchased this Nissan Patrol new with additional options for $77,500 (including all on-road costs). bstaplet would buy this car again because: “Love the noise, love the looks, love the space. It does use fuel, averaging around 16L/100 in mostly city driving, but drinking 98 is not cheap. But I’ve always thought if you’re spending that sort of money on a car you should be able to afford the petrol!”
How reliable has your car been? Tell us about any issues.
No issues at all, Nissan service centre has been really good.
I actually got them to fit the bigger tyres and recovery points for me as they were cheaper and did a good job with it. I also knew they would know how to work the tyre pressure monitor system, unlike plenty of tyre shops.
What do you think of the ownership experience with your car?
Nearly 18 months in and so far so good. It’s done everything I wanted it to and I still love the look and sound of it. Mine has been blacked out and had wheel and exhaust upgrade, so it turns a surprising amount of heads.
How has the purchase and aftercare experience been with your car?
Went through a broker. The dealer that sold the car was super helpful and delivered the car to me spotless. Service experience has been surprisingly good as well, that may be dealer dependent though.
It’s not like the treatment you get when I had an ML Mercedes, but I’m not paying $400 for wiper blades either!
Are you happy with the price and features of your car?
There really only seemed like two options: Y62 or 200 Series. After driving the 200 GXL then Y62 back-to-back I could not believe people still buy the Toyota. Even for the same price I’d probably have gone the 62. I’ve also driven the 300 a couple of times and given serious thought to swapping, I just can’t get my head around what the extra $40k for similar spec would get me.
I’m brand agnostic and really believe that you need to be a diehard fan of the brand to pay so much.
What do you think of the performance and economy of your car?
Performance is great. I’ve had some properly quick cars in the past so it’s not in that league, but coming from a HiLux it’s a rocket. Also it’s hard to beat the sound of a big petrol V8, particularly after swapping the exhaust.
It tows with ease, highway overtaking is really good. Economy? Well it’s a near on three-tonne car with a big V8, if you’re looking at it with economy in mind you’ve come to the wrong place.
What do you think of the technology in your car?
It’s not great of course. It’s all quite easy to use but the phone and map interface does annoy me sometimes. Especially when compared to my wife’s Mazda CX-30.
Having said that my previous car was a HiLux so it’s certainly no worse than that.
What do you think of the ride comfort and handling of your car?
Comfort is amazing. Eats highway kilometres with ease. It’s no sports car and it’s a big thing so negotiating tight back roads takes some attention, but I’d say handling is very good on road for what it is. It would have to be the most comfortable car I’ve ever had.
Do you have any additional comments about your car?
If you’re in the market for a car like this, do yourself a favour and go drive one. I’ve been in a Facebook owners group for two years now and there are no real issues that seem to pop up.
People who say they’re rubbish probably need a reason to justify spending 40 per cent more on something else…
